Job summary
The Palatine Ward is a joint collaboration between the haematology and transplant service and the teenage and young adult service, providing high quality care for adult patients with haematological malignancies and TYA (16-24 year old) patients with all types of cancers. We also treat paediatric patients receiving radioiodine treatment.
We are a 31 bedded ward with specialist side rooms for isolating severely immunocompromised patients. We give established evidence-based specialist treatments including chemotherapy and stem cell transplants; all supported by a comprehensive and thorough training process, inclusive of UKONS certificate for the delivery of Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment. Our Clinical Practice Facilitator team are here to support you for your education and development needs and you will be fully supported during your orientation program and beyond. We believe in team work on The Palatine Ward. We work in small teams which cover a cohort of patients, to provide 24-hour care to give therapy, provide symptom control, treat sepsis and maintain an overall holistic approach for the individuals we care for.
We are looking for a motivated adult or children's nurse to work in our fast paced but patient focused environment. You must want to develop new skills and knowledge around specialised cancer treatments. You will be caring, interested in haematology-oncology and the ever-advancing innovations in treatment and care.
Main duties of the job
A nurse on Palatine Ward will deliver care to a team of patients by monitoring them closely, performing clinical observations and fluid balance, administer medication, escalating concerns to the Acute Oncology Outreach team and senior colleagues. There will be training and develop opportunities provided to ensure the nurse becomes competent in accessing central lines and in the delivery of SACT. As the role develops the nurse would be expected to undertake the exciting role of stem cell re-infusion and CAR T-cell administration - these interventions are preceded by a strict conditioning process which the nurse will be responsible to administer.
At The Christie we have a large specialist Multi-Disciplinary Team who all strive to provide GoldStandard care to our patients, it will be within the role of the staff nurse to independently liaise with key MDT members to maintain excellent care provision.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated nurse, with excellent time management skills and well developed interpersonal and communication skills. A vested interest in Haematology and TYA Oncology is essential. To grow this interest and the skills of the nurse within this role, we will invest in their development with a period of supernumerary practice, a comprehensive inhouse training package, support from the CPF team and coaching from a preceptor/allocated team member. There will also be opportunity for further education and training as your career progresses

PROFESSIONAL:
1. As part of the ward team help achieve and maintain a high standard of patient care.2. To be assess the patients needs, both physical and psychological, seeking intervention from the wider multi-disciplinary team as appropriate.3. Maintain individuals privacy & dignity whilst they are inpatients, as well as ensuring there personal care needs are met .4. To welcome patients and introduce them to the ward routine and ensure they receive the most age appropriate welcome booklet.5. To be aware of the needs of relatives, and to give them support, advice and direct them to most appropriate supporting agencies.6. To give and receive the report at change over of duties and ensure handover sheet is updated at each shift.7. To participate in the rehabilitation of patients and give relatives any necessary instructions and support.8. Ensure that prescribed drugs and treatments are stored and administered correctly and in accordance with the Hospital Procedure and Policy. Including the administration of chemotherapy through peripheral cannulas and central lines.9. Correct care and custody of controlled drugs is observed at all times.10. To follow the correct procedure when notifying relatives of seriously ill patients and those who have died.11. To liaise with medical and para-medical personnel and community organisations to ensure timely and safe discharges.12. Ensure that blood products are administered correctly and in accordance with Hospital Procedure and Policy.13. To participate in internal rotation to night duty as required14. Report and record all accidents and complaints according to the agreed policy15. Ensure any concerns are raised and escalated to your line managers
EDUCATION:
1. Attend all mandatory training and update all e- Learning in accordance with Trust requirements2. Participate in all unit specific training for JACIE accreditation and TYA/Paediatric requirements including Paediatric life support, safe guarding training and UKONS accredited SACT training.3. To maintain training updates regarding radiation protection and the management of patients receiving radioiodine treatment and their relatives.4. Maintain own awareness of current nursing practice. Use relevant educational opportunities to maintain the highest standards and up to date care offered to patient with cancer.5. Participate in the theoretical and practical professional instruction of all learners and untrained staff and to monitor the progress of learners and, in particular, their skills in carrying out practical procedures.
