We are recruiting for a Consultant Clinical Scientistwho shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

A newly created position has arisen at Lister Hospital (Stevenage). It is an exciting time to be joining East and North Hertfordshire Teaching NHS Trust with several developments and future alignment with other clinical laboratories across the HWE network

The ESL (Lister) is undergoing transformation with installation of state-of-the-art clinical chemistry analysers and new LIMS system. With this will be the opportunity to contribute to the shape and future of pathology services

The successful candidate will join a biochemistry team comprising of one Consultant Chemical Pathology and one Principal Clinical Scientist (Biochemistry), with the department currently also hosting a specialist Registrar in Chemical Pathology metabolic Medicine and a trainee clinical scientist

The post holder will assist, and develop where required, a comprehensive scientific and clinical advisory service within Clinical Biochemistry, including Point of Care Testing (POCT). The Biochemistry Laboratory at Lister Hospital site performs acute analyses (e.g. Troponin, osmolality) and routine and specialist work (e.g. Endocrine, HbA1c, PEG macroprolactin)

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support clinical team in maintaining general laboratory service provision and quality assurance management.

The post holder will be based at the Lister Hospital but there may be a requirement on occasion to travel to HWE Hub site at Croxley Park, Watford.

There will also be a requirement to participate in a Duty Biochemistry rota and an out-of-hours on-call rota (minimum of 1 in 3 weeks which includes weekends and Bank Holidays).

Other responsibilities include result authorisation and reporting, laboratory support for quality control and external quality assurance review, POCT clinical support and leadership, clinical review and sign off for analyser verifications, vetting of esoteric investigations, clinical liaison with ENHT clinical staff (most notably paediatrics and endocrinology) and primary care, attendance at MDTs and other meetings as necessary.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Training Essential

First or upper second class degree in Science or related subject Registration as a Clinical Scientist in Biochemistry with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Full Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists (FRCPath)

Desirable

Higher postgraduate level qualification e.g., MSc, PhD , DSci Leadership and training experience

Previous Experience Essential

Have significant experience or period in post as a principal clinical scientist in a relevant diagnostic laboratory Have participated in audit and risk management activities

Skills Essential

Can work well as part of a team Can establish and maintain effective networks with professional, clinical and managerial colleagues within trust and beyond Able to supervise and lead activities of staff of various grades and background Able to lead on service development and delivery at a departmental level (e.g. POCT).

Knowledge Essential

Extensive knowledge of standard and specialized analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving Knowledge of managerial processes, resource allocation, and procurement within NHS Extensive knowledge of national professional and NHS guidelines relating to service provision and quality
