About this role

Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an Advanced Technical Officer in Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust to join the Pharmacy Aseptics Department at Pinderfields General Hospital. You will be responsible for undertaking a wide range of supervisory duties within the Pharmacy Technical Services department, supporting the delivery of safe and effective pharmaceutical services across the Trust and partner healthcare organisations. You will be managing technical activities to help enhance the quality of patient care, ensuring services are delivered efficiently to patients, wards, and departments. You will support the ongoing development of your professional practice by undertaking the Science Manufacturing Technician (SMT) qualification, enabling registration as an accountable professional with the Science Council for Registered Science Technicians (RSciTech). You will also be responsible for working independently within your area of expertise, using initiative while accessing managerial support when required.

Job description Job responsibilities

TO supervise and coordinate daily activities within the Aseptic Unit, acting as the lead point of contact for assigned areas and ensuring staff activities, workflow, and operational tasks are effectively managed in line with departmental requirements.

TO undertake the preparation and quality checking of aseptic and non-sterile medicinal products, including chemotherapy and parenteral nutrition, by following approved procedures, completing accurate calculations, and maintaining required technical competencies within controlled environments.

TO perform supervisory and accuracy checking duties within Technical Services, including monitoring production processes, reviewing documentation, supporting Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards, and ensuring deviations or quality concerns are appropriately escalated.

TO support the maintenance of safe pharmaceutical production environments by coordinating cleaning schedules, monitoring facility standards, ensuring compliance with environmental requirements, and promoting safe handling practices for hazardous substances.

TO manage stock control activities within Technical Services by maintaining accurate records, completing stock checks, investigating discrepancies, supporting procurement processes, and assisting with the management of specialist and outsourced products.

TO contribute to team development and service improvement by mentoring colleagues, supporting staff training activities, maintaining professional knowledge through continued development, and identifying opportunities to improve technical processes and working practices.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services or equivalent qualification/experience. Experience working within an Aseptic Pharmacy or Technical Services environment. Knowledge of GMP, quality assurance, and safe aseptic preparation practices. Strong IT, communication, and workload management skills with attention to detail. Ability to supervise, train, and support pharmacy staff within a controlled environment..
