As a significant part of these processes takes place in the cellular membrane, this will require the development of biochemical assays compatible with membrane proteins. Moreover, these model systems should be compatible with cryo-electron microscopy so that both the biochemical activity and structural changes of the proteins can be studied within the same system. In addition to the challenge posed by the membrane environment, metabolic activity often depends on the presence of a transmembrane proton gradient and an electrostatic potential difference across the lipid bilayer. An additional goal of this postdoctoral project will be to develop model systems in which these gradients can be established, manipulated, and measured.</p></div></div><div style="padding:10.0px 0.0px;border:1.0px solid transparent"><div style="font-size:16.0px;word-wrap:break-word"><H2 style="font-size:1.0em;margin:0.0px"></H2> </div><div><h2><strong>This is part of your profile: </strong></h2> <ul> <li>Experience in protein purification and working with membrane proteins </li> <li>Experience in sample preparation techniques for cryo-electron microscopy and should be familiar with the software used to process cryo-EM data and building protein structures </li> <li>The ideal candidate will also be familiar with the metabolism of nitrifiers and have experience in developing biochemical assays to study protein activity</li> <li>Experience working with model systems of the cellular membrane such as liposomes or submitochondrial particles is considered a plus</li> <li>PhD in a relevant field </li> </ul></div></div><div style="padding:10.0px 0.0px;border:1.0px solid transparent"><div style="font-size:16.0px;word-wrap:break-word"><H2 style="font-size:1.0em;margin:0.0px"></H2> </div><div><h2><strong>What we offer:</strong></h2> <p><strong>Access to diverse facilities for state-of-the-art analyses</strong> and unique instruments for single-cell activity assays such as NanoSIMS.</p> <p><strong>A diverse and stimulating work environment</strong> at the Centre for Microbiology & Environmental Systems Science, in the Division of Microbial Ecology.</p> <p><strong>Internal further training & Coaching:</strong> Opportunity to deepen your skills on an ongoing basis.
