Organization: Nursing Educ & Prf Development Job Summary: Vanderbilt Health – Executive Search Team is conducting a national search for a Director, Clinical Education and Professional Development.

The Director will support the Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital and our Staffing Collaborative.

Reporting to the Associate Nurse Executive with dotted lines to the Nursing leaders of the Psychiatric Hospital and the Staffing Collaborative. As a member of the leadership team, the Director of Clinical Education and Professional Development provides oversight for the development and execution of training programs that promote and create clinical practice standards. Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises programs of orientation, in-service-training, and continuing education. Takes a lead role in educational initiatives to ensure quality patient care and customer satisfaction. Acts as a resource and liaison to the VUMC community by serving on hospital wide committees or task forces. Represents Vanderbilt within the professional community. Provides leadership to ensure the delivery of quality and safe patient-centered care using key organizational strategies and evidence based tactics.. Key Responsibilities: Managing Vision & Purpose

• Collaborates with central clinical education leaders on enterprise wide initiatives. • Collaborates with nursing leaders and senior clinical and administrative staff to establish and execute programs that align with the organization’s mission, strategic plan, budgets, resource allocation, operational plans, and policies. • Identifies, allocates, and proposes resources to deliver projects/initiatives aligned with organizational priorities. • Leverages the performance development process of goal setting, ongoing assessment, coaching and performance evaluation to achieve goals. Evaluates direct reports. Coordinates learning needs assessments for individuals/groups of staff. Provides leaders with staff performance data in relation to established internal and external benchmarks. • Partners with all members of the leadership team to execute on patient safety and quality outcome goals. Establishes mutually agreed upon corrective action plans with assigned responsibilities to achieve desired outcomes. • Acts as a consultant and liaison with area staff, educators, and leadership to promote agreed upon Patient Care Standards. Interprets policies and procedures to clinical staff. Collaborates with leadership team to address issues related to quality, compliance, competency, and education. Utilizes strategies such as rounding for outcomes. • Provides feedback to leadership team related to staff progress and role transition. Assists in establishing standards for staffing and effectiveness with leadership team using internal and external standards. Clinical Quality Management and Service Orientation

• Implements programs and monitors activities that promote a safe, therapeutic, customer-friendly environment. • Collaborates with management team to monitor satisfaction outcomes and develop action plans to address issues within scope of responsibility. • Acts as clinical leader and provides education for staff on clinical standards. Plans, implements, evaluates, and revises training for staff in accordance with the JC, OSHA standards, and area/hospital policies. Collaborates to develop initial and ongoing staff competencies. Reviews staff compliance summaries. • Ensures that care is safe, effective, efficient, timely, equitable, patient centered, and evidence based. Utilizes current literature, best practices, and an interdisciplinary approach to develop Patient Care Standards. Stays current in area of professional nursing development practice. Uses appropriate processes and models to monitor and proactively manage risk. • Coaches staff to prioritize and collaborate with the healthcare team. Collaborates with the rest of the leadership team to determine areas for improvement in clinical practice and develop improvement plans. • Active participant in clinical practice policy development/revision. Makes recommendations for education or other appropriate actions. Takes a leadership role in determining how new/changing technology is used in clinical practice. Identifies clinical questions and participates in relevant research. • Collaborates to define space requirements. Advocates for space to meet staff educational needs Developing & Retaining Top Talent

• Collaborates with staff and leaders to plan and implement orientation programs, transition to practice programs, and staff and leader development opportunities. Incorporates relevant policy into the orientation process. Develops systems/processes to help staff meet competency requirements. Utilizes available technology and other creative instructional strategies. Develops entity specific strategies that support organizational goals. • Serves as a professional nursing role model through priority setting, resource utilization, professional behaviors, critical thinking, problem solving and communication. Assesses learning needs of new and existing staff and plans accordingly. Matches learners with appropriate resources. Assists in creating an organizational culture across the enterprise that promotes lifelong learning and development which provides a safe, satisfying and enriching environment. Accountable for development of individual and team competence/performance. • Collaborates with leadership to create and implement strategies that promote retention and are designed to make VH an employer of choice. • Mentors and coaches staff in effective time management and prioritization of competing needs. Identifies resources to manage competing demands to support optimum entity function. Works with leadership team to determine area priorities that align with institutional priorities. Problem-Solving, Innovation & Initiative

• Leads and models collaboration with others to identify and address issues, solve problems and evaluate outcomes. Participates on shared governance, departmental and/or organizational committees to address system problems/issues and facilitate information exchange. • Leverages resources within the entity and across the organization to identify and develop innovative strategies that improve service, quality and productivity. • Recognizes, initiates, and leads change utilizing established methods such as Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA).

Qualifications:

• Nursing degree required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and three years of experience. • Master’s degree: If nursing degree at Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) level, then masters can be non-nursing degree. (Required) Preferred Qualifications:

• Nursing degree required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), or Doctorate in Nursing. • If nursing degree at Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) level, then masters can be non-nursing degree. (Required) and 5 + years experience. • The ideal candidate will have experience working in a highly complex, matrixed Academic Medical Center, with relevant leadership experience. #LI-AM1
