About this role
[What the role is] This role is intended to strengthen the department’s capability in: • Embodied AI, with emphasis on intelligent behaviour emerging from the tight coupling of AI, hardware, and physical interaction. • Hands on development of embodied intelligent systems, including system design, mechanical construction, integration, experimentation, and validation. • Application of AI techniques to real world robotics and mechatronics problems, beyond software only or theoretical work. • System level design and integration of intelligent robotic and mechatronic systems, including mechanical, electrical, and control considerations. [What you will be working on]
• Deliver PET and CET curricula, and develop course content encompassing curriculum design, course delivery, and project supervision in the areas of Embodied AI, Mechatronics, Electronics, Mechanical Design, and Advanced Simulation & Modelling.
• Design, review, and maintain learning units focused on Embodied AI, including intelligent perception, learning, decision‑making, and control in physical robotic and mechatronic systems.
• Supervise and mentor learners in applied Embodied AI projects, where AI models are integrated with sensing, actuation, and real‑world robotic platforms.
• Coach and mentor learners and contribute actively to learner development and capability‑building activities.
• Identify, initiate, and spearhead industry collaborations, applied research, and innovation initiatives related to embodied and intelligent systems.
• Plan, lead, and manage industry and applied projects involving Embodied AI and intelligent mechatronic systems, and supervise learners involved in such projects.
• Lead or represent the department in committees and undertake administrative or management duties (e.g. outreach activities, industry engagement, overseas educational trips).
[What we are looking for] The candidate should possess the following qualifications, skills, and experience:
• A Relevant qualification in Engineering or a related discipline.
• At least 3 years of relevant industry or applied experience in engineering‑related fields such as Embodied AI, Robotics, Mechatronics, Electronics, Mechanical Systems, or Simulation.
• Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following areas:
• Embodied AI, including intelligence arising from interaction between algorithms, hardware, and the physical environment
• Building, integrating, or deploying intelligent robotic or mechatronic systems
• Applying AI or machine learning techniques to robotics problems (e.g. perception, control, adaptation, autonomy)
• Mechanical design for robotics, including actuators, manipulators, transmission mechanisms, and structural components
• Mechatronic system design, integration, and simulation
• Robotic systems development, including sensing, actuation, embedded control, and system integration
• Design engineering analysis (CAE / FEA)
• Sustainability‑driven engineering design
• Strong problem‑solving and critical thinking skills, with good interpersonal and communication abilities.
• Ability to translate hands‑on system development experience and applied engineering practice into effective teaching and learning experiences.
