The School of Biological Sciences (SBS), part of the College of Science at Nanyang Technological University, was established in 2002 with a mission to advance excellence in biological and biomedical sciences. Our research spans diverse and impactful areas including infectious diseases, immunology, neurodegenerative disorders, telomere biology, and genome function. We are seeking a motivated and proactive Executive / Senior Executive (Teaching Laboratory) to support the planning, preparation, and smooth operation of undergraduate teaching laboratories.
Job Description
Teaching Laboratory Operations
• Support the planning, preparation, and delivery of undergraduate laboratory practical sessions.
• Liaise with course coordinators on practical requirements, schedules, and laboratory safety matters.
• Prepare laboratory reagents, consumables, specimens, and equipment required for practical sessions.
• Set up, calibrate, and relocate laboratory equipment as required for teaching activities.
• Brief Teaching Assistants on laboratory procedures, experimental protocols, and safety requirements.
• Provide safety and technical support to undergraduate students during laboratory practical.
• Conduct trial runs of new and existing practical protocols, troubleshoot technical issues, and ensure experiments are reproducible and effective.
Procurement and Inventory Management
• Assist in the preparation and monitoring of teaching laboratory budgets.
• Procure laboratory consumables, chemicals, equipment, and other teaching-related materials.
• Maintain accurate procurement records and documentation according to University’s policies.
• Maintain inventory records for assets, consumables, chemicals, and teaching materials.
• Support inter-department activities on asset sighting.
Laboratory and Equipment Management
• Ensure laboratories are well-maintained, organised, and operational.
• Perform routine cleaning, maintenance, and functional checks of laboratory equipment before and after semester periods.
• Coordinate equipment servicing, repairs, and preventive maintenance.
• Monitor stock levels of laboratory consumables and chemicals and replenish supplies as required.
• Report laboratory infrastructure defects and coordinate rectification with relevant stakeholders.
Laboratory Safety and Compliance
• Maintain proper storage, handling, and documentation of chemicals and biological materials in compliance with University and Workplace Safety & Health (WSH) requirements.
• Ensure timely updating of chemical inventories.
• Oversee and handle safe disposal of laboratory waste.
• Reinforce laboratory safety practices and procedures during practical sessions.
• Participate in emergency preparedness activities, including first aid, chemical spill response, and fire drills.
• Prepare and review Risk Assessments for laboratory activities and experimental protocols.
• Ensure compliance with University and School’s safety policies and updates for audit preparation.
School Support
• Provide administrative support for teaching laboratory operations.
• Assist in school events, outreach activities, and other duties as assigned.
Requirements
• Diploma in Life Sciences or a related discipline.
• Entry-level candidates are welcome to apply. Candidates with relevant experience in teaching or research laboratory, preferably within an Institution of Higher Learning, will have an advantage.
• Basic knowledge of laboratory operations, reagent preparation, and laboratory housekeeping.
• Familiarity with laboratory techniques in molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and mammalian and/or insect cell culture is preferred.
• Proficiency in the operation of common laboratory equipment, such as biological safety cabinets, centrifuges, compound microscopes, and pH meters.
• Good understanding of laboratory safety practices and chemical handling procedures.
• Good organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
• Adaptable and able to respond effectively to changing operational requirements.
• Demonstrates initiative, attention to detail, and a strong sense of responsibility and accountability.
• Able to identify operational issues, troubleshoot effectively, and implement appropriate solutions.
• Experience in data recording, analysis, and presentation would be an advantage.
