Job Description
The Australian Financial Review is seeking a NSW Political Correspondent based in Sydney to join our national team. In this role, you will report on critical NSW political and economic issues, delivering agenda-setting journalism for a sophisticated, national audience. If you’re an ambitious reporter with a record of breaking major stories, this is your opportunity to work alongside Australia's top journalists.
Day to day you will:
• Break news and pitch original stories that lead the agenda across NSW political, economic, and social issues.
• Write clear, accurate, and balanced articles and features to inform the AFR’s audience.
• File high-quality copy in a timely manner on breaking or fast-moving stories.
• Provide sophisticated context and analysis of major issues.
• Proactively manage the visual presentation of your stories by commissioning relevant photography and graphics.
• Maintain and expand an extensive network of reliable, authoritative political and business contacts.
• Collaborate closely with newsroom editors and fellow journalists on overarching coverage plans and digital projects.
What you'll bring:
• Proven experience as a reporter, or experience in business or politics with exceptional writing skills.
• Deep understanding of NSW politics, key players, and the core issues impacting the state’s business community.
• Wide network of contacts in Sydney and beyond.
• Solid editorial judgement with a demonstrated ability to nail the right angle and pitch original stories.
• A genuine passion for news and current affairs, economics, and business.
• Outstanding organisation and time-management skills to consistently meet newsroom deadlines.
• A collaborative mindset with excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively and independently within a fast-paced team.
