Job Summary: Provide guidance and facilitate skills/competency assessments for Surgical Assisting (CSFA) and Surgical Technology (SRGT) courses including labs, clinical, and independent study. Participate in skills assessment development and review for order of instructional materials and equipment.
Required Qualifications: Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Train and direct students on local anesthesia injection, incision and dissection, and trocar placement skills. • Monitor and assess skill development in Foley catheterization, skin preparation, and/or positioning of the surgical patient and tourniquet placement. • Assess and guide student usage of appropriate knowledge of normal pathological anatomy and physiology, recognition, and appropriate response to surgical events. • Provide training and direction to students in techniques and skills of intraoperative visualization and assistance of retraction, knot tying, suctioning/irrigation, application of hemostatic agents, electrosurgical unit (ESU) hemostasis; insertion of drains, closure of wound/body planes, and various suture techniques and/skills; splinting and immobilization, placement of post-surgical dressings and wound VACs, etc. • Provide training and direction to students in perioperative principles and surgical technology skills, including sterile technique, surgical instrumentation, case preparation, tissue handling, surgical counts, specimen management, electrosurgical equipment, patient positioning, surgical equipment operation, and operating room procedures while ensuring compliance with accreditation standards and best practices. • • Assist with monitoring and assessing students during surgical clinical experiences. • Review surgical instructional videos and provide feedback.

• Knowledge of the Association of Surgical Assisting Core Curriculum and Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting clinical standards and guidelines • Knowledge of the surgical assisting program, Advanced Technical Certificate (ATC) admission requirements, and graduation requirements • Knowledge of the surgical technology program, AAS admission requirements, and graduation requirements • Knowledge of duties, role, and responsibilities of surgical assistant • Knowledge of Collin College website • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software • Knowledge of each semester syllabi and calendar • Surgical Assistant and Surgical Technology roles pre-, intra-, and post-operative skills • Organization skills • Time management skills • Presentation skills • Verbal and written communication skills • Ability to establish working relationships • Ability to advise and assist students with program information and progression • Ability to understand curriculum • Ability to maintain and communicate need to order materials and equipment • Ability to evaluate skill performance
Physical Demands, Working Conditions and Physical Effort Light Work - Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly having to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for the Sedentary Work category and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated Light Work. Positions in this class typically include talking, hearing, seeing, grasping, standing, walking and repetitive motions, plus stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching. Relatively free from unpleasant environmental conditions or hazards. Office environment. Occasional physical effort required.
Requirements Associate degree from an accredited institution. Successful completion of an accredited surgical assisting program. Successful completion of an accredited surgical technology program. Two (2) years of experience as a Certified Surgical First Assistant. Two (2) years of experience as a Certified Surgical Technologist. Five (5) years of experience as a surgical preceptor. Licenses and Certifications Current Certified Surgical First Assist credential from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) required. Current Certified Surgical Technology credential. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Certification for health care providers or equivalent required.
