About the job:
The AI Product Engineer is an AI first builder within AI Product Engineering capability and AI Pods. This role is responsible for turning customer and business problems into working product solutions by using AI as the default execution medium across design support, implementation, testing, documentation, release preparation and analysis.
This is not a traditional software development role built around rigid handoffs, story point rituals, or narrow ticket execution. The AI Product Engineer moves from problem understanding to working software quickly, while maintaining strong engineering judgment, product awareness, and quality standards.
The role is central to H&L’s move toward an agentic product and development lifecycle. It requires end to end ownership across frontend, backend, data, testing, deployment and production reliability. It also requires clear accountability for the areas that must remain human led, including customer problem framing, product judgment, architecture, security, trade off decisions, quality control for edge cases, and release readiness.
What you will do
AI first product building
Build working product solutions using AI as the default approach across coding, testing, debugging, documentation and technical researchRapidly prototype, iterate and refine solutions to validate ideas and accelerate deliveryUse AI agents and AI assisted workflows to generate designs, implementations, tests and supporting documentationContribute to H&L’s move toward an agentic product and software delivery model
Problem analysis and solution design
Analyse customer and business problems deeply before executionBreak ambiguous problems into solvable components and evaluate multiple solution pathsMake informed trade-offs between speed, quality, maintainability, security and customer valueApply strong engineering and product judgment to architecture, design and implementation decisions
End to end engineering delivery
Build modern, scalable frontend applications using React/Angular and TypeScriptDesign and implement robust backend services using Node.jsDevelop and maintain clean, secure and well-structured RESTful APIsDesign sound data models and work effectively with relational and non-relational databasesSupport cloud native services in AWS environmentsWork with Docker, CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment practicesEnsure strong automated test coverage across unit, integration and end to end layers
Product and customer value
Partner with Product, Design, Support and customer facing teams to ensure solutions solve real customer problemsParticipate in customer demos and explain how solutions work and why key design decisions were madeIncorporate customer and operational feedback into fast iteration cyclesHelp ensure shipped capabilities drive measurable adoption, usage and business impact
Quality, governance and reliability

Frontend
Deep experience with React, Angular and TypeScript in production grade applicationsStrong proficiency in modern JavaScript, HTML5 and CSS3Experience designing scalable and maintainable frontend architecturesExperience integrating RESTful APIs
Backend
Extensive experience designing and implementing backend systems using Node.jsStrong experience building RESTful APIsSolid understanding of relational databases, data modelling and query optimisationExperience with asynchronous processing and system integration
