About this role

The University Hospital Essen offers first class medical services in the Ruhr metropolis. Every year, 225.000 patients are treated in 30 clinics, 27 institutes and specialized centers. The over 8.000 employees offer medical care with state-of-the art diagnostics and therapies, which meet highest international standards. Patient care is connected with basic and translational research at an internationally competitive level. The project We will examine the origin and function of CD177+ and CD177- neutrophils, and elucidate their implications for stroke and cancer outcome in humans and the cellular characteristics of both neutrophil subsets using biomaterial and surrogate models, both human and mice.

The major task of the project will be to work on the origin and in-depth molecular and functional characterization of CD177+ and - human neutrophils, the identification of binding partners for CD177 on mouse and human microglia and the interactions of CD177+ and CD177- neutrophils with ischemic brain endothelium.

The project will build upon methods established in the first funding period such as advanced proteomics and deep multiplex imaging and newly introduced approaches from collaborations of the second FP including human bone marrow organoids. It bears immediate implications for human physiology and disease, as the work will mostly focus on human cells and human clinical samples. You are looking for a challenging immunology PhD position with clinical relevance (translational research) within a large national research network. You have a university degree (Master or Diploma) in a life-science or biomedical subject. Knowledge in neurobiology, immunology, molecular biology and/or computational biology is an advantage. Ideally, you already have experience in imaging and/or multiomics. The willingness to work with animals is essential as are good communication skills in English. The Institute for Experimental Immunology and Imaging deals with the visualization and functional analysis of immune cells in vitro and in vivo. The focus is on neutrophil granulocytes. We use a wide range of immunological methods, such as qPCR, flow cytometry and animal models. However, the technological focus of our institute is state-of-the-art microscopic imaging methods (e.g. confocal, lightsheet and intravital microscopy). Prior experience with such methods is an advantage, but we will also train you to become a pro. For more information, please visit: https://www.uni-due.de/experimental-immunology

Our group offers the participation in regular scientific seminars, e.g. project discussions and journal clubs. In addition, successful candidates will participate in the graduate school NEUTROTRAIN, which offers a structured training program and an exchange between PhD students from different research groups of the TRR, thereby focusing specifically on the needs of a neutrophil researcher.
