About this role

Our acute care SLPs treat a mix of oral dysphagia, pharyngeal dysphagia, cognition, and communication needs of our patients. We treat patients across the pediatric age span from prematurity through adolescence. Diagnoses may be congenital or acquired; common medical histories for speech referrals at Riley Hospital are neurologic injuries or disorders, respiratory illnesses, patients with history of prolonged intubations and/or ECMO, tracheostomy, burn related injuries, cerebral palsy, prematurity with related comorbidities, genetic disorders, congenital heart disease, cleft palate, and difficulty feeding. Family competency in carrying out SLP recommendations is a major component of acute care programming. The acute care setting is staffed 365-days out of the year. Therapists do have weekend working requirements (typically 6-7 weekend days every 6 months) as well as working one holiday/holiday weekend a year.
