Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for nurses or midwives to work in our Birmingham centre.

This role includes hybrid working providing telephone and face-to-face consultations within our Remote Services team, working up to 38 hours per week (9.5 hours per day 8am - 6pm and late shift 10am - 8pm). There will also be an expectation for the successful candidate to work 2 weekend days a month and up to 2 late shifts a month.

We are looking for nurses/midwives (newly qualified Nurses and Midwives will also be considered) who can deliver safe and effective care of patients wanting to access; consultation for unplanned pregnancy, surgical and medical abortions, contraception and sexual health services for women.

You will need to be able to fulfil an integral role within our multidisciplinary team delivering a confidential abortion service. You will need to be motivated, enthusiastic, caring and empathetic. Pro-choice is a must.

Main duties of the job

To deliver safe and effective care of patients from admission to discharge in accordance with Healthcare Commission Standards, NMC Guidelines for Professional Practice and company policies and procedures.

Ensure the patients are aware of their options.

Undertaking consultations including the discussion and confirmation of treatment options.

Discuss contraceptive options and provide/fit contraception in accordance with guidelines NUPAS policies.

Appropriately Consenting patients for treatment/procedures.

Provide and inform patients on STI Screening.

Identify safeguarding concerns.

Checking details on patient notes and alerting Doctor/surgeon/anaesthetist to any significant conditions.

Ensuring patients are informed about aftercare prior to discharge.

Providing confidential telephone advice for patients with post-operative problems following discharge.

Completion of contemporaneous patient records, consent and registers.

Job description Job responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated, NMC-registered Nurse or Midwife (newly qualified Nurses and Midwives will also be considered) to join the Telephone Consultation Team at NUPAS as a Specialist Practitioner. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled clinician to play a key role in delivering and supporting high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centred abortion care across the organisation.

The postholder will work autonomously and collaboratively within telephone consultation team, providing expert clinical advice and support to women who have chosen to terminate their pregnancy. This includes delivering a compassionate and responsive consultation service, ensuring patients receive timely, safe, and effective care.

In addition to direct patient support, the successful candidate will provide clinical guidance and support to colleagues, including doctors, nurses, midwives, and administrative staff. Responsibilities include facilitating patient involvement in the decision-making process regarding all aspects of their abortion, taking thorough medical histories, counselling for contraception and sexual health screening, undertaking full safeguarding assessments, consenting for early medical abortion procedures and contributing to quality improvement.

The role carries responsibility for maintaining high standards of clinical practice, ensuring all care is delivered in line with the Abortion Act 1967, Department of Health RSOPs, NUPAS policies and national guidelines. The postholder will contribute towards risk management and audit.

As a senior clinician, you will demonstrate advanced communications skills, act as a role model and advocate for patients, promoting choice, dignity, and excellence in care.

Job Purpose

To provide advanced clinical leadership and expert remote nursing/midwifery support within the Telephone Consultation Team, ensuring safe, effective, and high-quality care for patients accessing NUPAS services. The post holder will demonstrate high levels of clinical autonomy, accountability, and decision-making in line with professional, legal, and organisational standards.

Clinical Responsibilities

To ensure safe, effective, and high-quality clinical practice, the Telephone Consultation Team Nurse/Midwife will:

Deliver advanced remote clinical support to patients accessing the telephone consultation service, demonstrating a high level of professional autonomy, accountability, and clinical expertise. Facilitate patients involvement in the decision-making process regarding all aspects of their abortion. Advise and educate patients surrounding the legalities of abortion in line with the Abortion Act 1967. Undertake comprehensive remote consultations that comprise of thorough medical and social history to assess eligibility for treatment, making appropriate clinical decisions and identifying clinical risks. Provide family planning and sexual health advice, including counselling for contraceptive methods and undertaking sexual health risk assessments to ensure patients are signposted to screening as appropriate. Provide evidence-based information on treatment options, medications and aftercare, ensuring a thorough plan of care is outlined and implemented. Counselling and consenting patients for Early Medical Abortion treatments. Support the pills by post service by performing final checks of clinical notes and prescriptions to ensure Early Medical Abortion treatment is safe to be sent via the delivery service. Utilise advanced clinical judgement and highly developed communication skills to assess risk, recognise patient deterioration, and initiate timely escalation, referral, or emergency intervention as required. Ensure care is patient-centred, promotes shared decision-making, and meets legal and professional standards for informed consent. Contribute to clinical quality, safety, and governance by adhering to organisational policies, national guidelines, and professional standards, and actively supporting continuous service improvement. Act as a role model for clinical excellence, providing guidance, support, and informal supervision to less experienced staff to promote high standards of care.Service Coordination & Clinical Operations

Provide expert support and coordination for patients by accurately assessing eligibility during remote consultations to ensure patients are directed to the right pathway (e.g. medical management, in-person review, NHS referral or escalation). Reducing delays to care by providing thorough consultations alongside clear documentation to help avoid repeat contacts, unnecessary appointments, or missed steps in the care pathway. Complete safeguarding duties in line with policy, including identifying concerns, initiating appropriate actions, and referring to safeguarding teams where required. Initiate plans for care, provide reassurance and confirm ongoing care requirements. Log clinical complications and incidents accurately using designated reporting systems (e.g. RADAR), supporting clinical governance and patient safety. Ensure that the telephone consultation task list is regularly monitored and actioned in a timely manner to avoid delays to patient care.Patient Care & Clinical Practice

Always recognise and uphold the patients right to dignity and respect.

Ensure all patient care is clearly, accurately, and contemporaneously documented in Electronic Patient Records, in line with professional and legal standards. Demonstrate effective communication skills and an empathetic approach, ensuring patients understand information and are supported in decision making. Refer patients into the NUPAS counselling service where appropriate and provide appropriate emotional support during care pathways. Signpost and support patients to access relevant external services as required to meet holistic care needs.Clinical Information & Risk Management

Screen for clinical risks including contraindications to treatment, ectopic pregnancies, gestational limits for treatment and complex medical histories. Safeguarding and vulnerability assessment including identifying and responding to coercion, abuse or capacity concerns, ensuring timely escalation and multidisciplinary intervention. Maintain patient confidentiality by ensuring sensitive patient information is handled in line with GDPR and clinical governance standards to protect organisational compliance. Maintain patient safety through robust risk assessment, clinical escalation, and adherence to clinical pathways. Ensure work undertaken is within legal and governance frameworks, local and national guidelines and is compliant with regulators.Professional Practice & Governance

Demonstrate effective time management and prioritisation skills, ensuring patients are managed according to clinical urgency and service needs. Work effectively under pressure, managing competing demands while maintaining high standards of care. Always maintain strict adherence to patient confidentiality and data protection requirements. Contribute to a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement across the service. Support less experienced colleagues through peer-to-peer training, informal guidance, supervision and knowledge sharing to promote best practice.Professional Development

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Identify and escalate any risk or safeguarding concerns to senior colleagues and actively seek to reduce or eliminate those concerns identified in a positive manner. To embrace safeguarding mechanisms and support staff, patients and supporters at times when safeguarding principles need to be applied.

Qualifications Essential

Current Nurse and or Midwifery Council NMC registration as a Registered Nurse Sub part 1 of the NMC register Registered Midwife. Must be pro-choice . Application must evidence the skills and experience to fulfil all elements of the Job Description

Desirable

Professional Nurse or Midwifery advocate Up to date knowledge and experience of working in a sexual health TOP or Gynaecological service.
