2026-2027 School Year POSITION SUMMARY he Assistant Custodian plays a vital role in maintaining and caring for the facilities at Framingham Public Schools. The position is responsible for executing routine custodial, cleaning, and groundskeeping duties to ensure school buildings, grounds, and common areas remain clean, orderly, safely operational, and secure for students, staff, and the community. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, reliable, and physically capable of performing heavy manual labor and facility upkeep.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Framingham Public Schools seeks candidates whose background, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and belonging in all aspects of education.

• Educational Requirement: High School Diploma or equivalent trade school experience preferred.

• Professional Experience: Prior custodial experience is preferred.

• Language Proficiency: Bilingual proficiency in Spanish and/or Portuguese is preferred.

• Professional Reliability: Maintain a good prior work record regarding performance, congeniality, honesty, and dependability.

• Technical Proficiency: Capability to operate various custodial and grounds maintenance equipment, such as buffers, vacuums, and lawnmowers.

• Safety Adherence: Strict adherence to safety rules and procedures, including the proper use of protective equipmen

• Cultural Proficiency: Demonstrated cultural proficiency and competence in fostering an equitable and inclusive district environment for all staff, students, and families.

• Professionalism & Composure: Maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance; exhibit professionalism in responding to high-stakes or unpredictable classroom situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed. I. General Maintenance & Minor Repairs

• Handles minor building and equipment repairs, including minor painting and touch-ups.

• Changes light bulbs as needed, both indoors and outdoors.

• Oils and lubricates equipment and changes filters as necessary.

• Conducts checks on fire safety equipment, emergency lighting, fire/smoke alarms, deluge showers, and eyewash stations.

• Opens and locks exit doors, checks panic hardware and door closers, and reports malfunctions.

• Works with the senior custodian to regulate the HVAC system for optimal indoor temperatures.

II. Groundskeeping & Exterior Upkeep

• Performs landscaping tasks such as cutting grass, trimming, fertilizing, weeding, and picking up litter.

• Sweeps or shovel snow, applies sand and salt, and chips ice from exterior walks and steps.

III. Logistics, Heavy Moving, & Event Setup

• Arranges rooms as required for various activities.

IV. Custodial Support & Deep Cleaning

• Executes various custodial tasks, including sanitizing, scrubbing, waxing, buffing, and dusting furniture and equipment to maintain a clean and safe environment.

• Vacuums and shampoos carpets.

• Washes windows, mirrors, glass, and other surfaces.

• Cleans furniture, equipment, sills, ledges, heating grills, ventilation units, walls, ceilings, stairs, and boilers.

• Empties wastebaskets and trash receptacles in offices, classrooms, lounges, kitchens, gymnasiums, corridors, and bathrooms, and disposes of rubbish properly.

V. Professional Responsibilities and Development

• Inspects both the interior and exterior of the building for vandalism and reports any issues to the senior custodian.

• Notifies the senior custodian of emergencies and assists in overtime work as necessary.

• Recommends the reordering of supplies to the senior custodian.

• Completes any required paperwork.

• Works collaboratively with all building personnel, visitors, co-workers, and supervisors.

• Adheres to all safety protocols.

• Physical Stamina: Required to stand, be on feet, and move around for a full work shift.

• Movement & Flexibility: Frequently required to bend, sit, move, and work in restricted spaces, including crawling or climbing at heights.

• Lifting: Ability to lift up to 60 pounds and move heavier materials using appropriate equipment.

• Equipment Operation: Must be able to work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts, and district vehicles.

• Environmental Exposure: Occasionally works in outside weather conditions and may be exposed to wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, or toxic/caustic chemicals.

• Hazardous Materials: Potential exposure to blood or other infectious materials; wearing protective equipment like latex gloves is required per OSHA regulations.

• Noise Levels: Noise levels may be high when operating power equipment.

• Behavioral De-escalation & Resilience: Capacity to remain calm and professional when exposed to dynamic or unpredictable facility emergencies and school environment situations.

REPORTS TO

• Senior Building Custodians and/or Shift Foreperson (and/or Designee).

• The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the Framingham School Custodial Services (Unit C) Contract.

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION

• This position is classified as Non-Exempt (Hourly).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

• Covered under Framingham School Custodial Services (Unit C) Contract.

• Work Year: 260 days (Twelve-Months).

• The District reserves the right to transfer personnel as needed.
