Job Title: Special Education Teacher General Description: Assists students in the fulfilling of their potential for intellectual, emotional, and psychological growth. Requirements:
• Possesses at minimum a bachelor's degree.
• Holds or is eligible for a Virginia teaching license with the appropriate teaching endorsement.
Reports To: Principal; Assistant Principal Essential Job Functions:
• Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.
• Develops individualized educational programs and lesson plans.
• Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
• Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all units, lessons and projects that are measurable, attainable, realistic, and specific.
• Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
• Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
• Diagnoses the learning styles of students regularly and refers to specialists as needed.
• Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by the school division.
• Assists the administration in implementing all policies/rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains discipline in a fair and just manner.
• Confers with colleagues, students, and parents regularly.
• Attends and participates in staff meetings and makes provisions for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.
• Assists in the selection of texts, equipment, and other instructional materials.
• Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for assistants and/or volunteers.
• Accepts a share of responsibility for co-curricular activities as assigned.
• Maintains positive public relations at all times.
• Completes other tasks as assigned.
