About this role

Position Overview: The Middle School Health Teacher will deliver a comprehensive, standards-based health education curriculum to students in grades 6–8, at the Coolidge and Parker middle schools. This role promotes healthy decision-making and lifelong wellness while aligning instruction with the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health Curriculum Framework. The ideal candidate fosters a safe and inclusive learning environment and is skilled in addressing a wide range of physical, social, and emotional health topics. Key Responsibilities:

• Plan and deliver engaging, age-appropriate lessons based on the Massachusetts Health and Physical Education Frameworks and National Health Education Standards (NHES).

• Teach units on physical health, mental and emotional wellness, human growth and development, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, personal safety, and social-emotional skills.

• Create a classroom environment that supports equity, inclusivity, and respect for diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

• Use a variety of instructional strategies and assessments to meet the needs of all learners.

• Collaborate with school counselors, nurses, physical education staff, and families to support a coordinated approach to student wellness.

• Maintain appropriate confidentiality when addressing sensitive topics and student needs.

• Participate in district- and school-level professional development and initiatives.

• Communicate regularly and effectively with families and caregivers.

• Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and progress reports.

• Uphold all state and federal laws related to student wellness, health education, and mandated reporting.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Health Education, Public Health, or a related field

• Valid Massachusetts DESE teaching license in Health/Family & Consumer Sciences (grades 5–12)

• Understanding of Massachusetts state standards for health education

• Familiarity with culturally responsive teaching practices

Preferred Qualifications:

• Master's degree in Health Education or related discipline

• Experience teaching middle school students in a public school setting

• Experience with inclusive and trauma-informed instructional practices

• CPR/First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain)

• Strong knowledge of adolescent development and student-centered pedagogy

• Ability to engage students in sensitive and meaningful health-related conversations

• Commitment to creating a safe, equitable, and affirming classroom culture

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills with students, families, and colleagues
