Exceptional Children's Teacher Assistant - Occupational Course of Study Job Coach QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Associate degree or 48 semester hours of college level coursework and Effective Teacher Training course. 2. NC License to drive a school bus or ability to get one 3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable. REPORTS TO: Work Experience Coordinator JOB GOAL: To assist the coordinator by monitoring and assisting special need students in the classroom and during other activities to ensure the provision of quality instruction in a safe environment. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Follows all rules, policies and procedures of Carteret County Public Schools, long with state and federal regulations pertaining to special education. 2. Provides job coaching to students at off campus work sites and assist them in learning the responsibilities of their internship. 3. Drive students to and from work sites on a Carteret County Public Schools's bus as needed. 4. Work with students on campus to help them complete Occupational Course of Study (OCS) career portfolios and presentations. Review the student's hard copy and electronic copy of the portfolio. 5. Be prepared to help students during any available class time. 6. Become familiar with the disabilities of OCS students and the appropriate workplace accommodations that will help them be successful in completing their job tasks by reviewing student files and information provide in the job coaching handbook. 7. Become familiar with websites and current information that can be used to enhance job coaching skills. 8. Read Occupational Preparation I-IV goals and objectives and stay up to date with changes in the OCS program. 9. Complete Occ Prep attendance logs and student evaluations for each six-week grading period. 10. Attend school district training as required. 11. Communicate directly with work experience coordinator with any questions, concerns, or problems regarding the OCS Occ Prep program. 12. Conduct class as scheduled if the work experience coordinator is absent. 13. Administers scores and records such achievement and diagnostic tests as the coordinator recommends for individual students. 14. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the coordinator; create and modify materials to match student abilities. 15. Assists the coordinator in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities. 16. Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. 17. Helps students master equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes. 18. Monitors student behavior and help maintain discipline in the classroom; record time out and in-class suspensions; assist with crisis prevention; assist with de-escalation techniques with students as needed. 19. Assists with delivery of special services; assist with daily living skills; feed and toilet students if necessary; and assist with any other task students are unable to perform for themselves as directed by the supervising teacher. 20. Constantly monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitor student attitudes and encourage self-esteem. 21. Collaborates with coordinator to incorporate information provided by parents, doctors, nurses, therapists and others in order to understand the needs of and provide services for students. 22. Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintain records of student progress; develop and file incident reports; grade student papers; check daily attendance; make copies; distribute materials to students; develop classroom displays and instructional material; maintain and operate audiovisual equipment; maintain class files. 23. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of development and support of special education program. 25. Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips. 26. Alerts the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student. 27. Serves as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in absence of the regular teacher. 28. Obtain a School Bus Drivers License and drive a school bus when requested. 29. Serves as school bus monitor when requested. 30. Performs related duties and responsibilities as requested by the teacher and/or principal.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information. ? Ability to follow detailed written and oral instructions. ? Ability to operate a motor vehicle, obtain a bus license, and operate a school bus. ? Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children. ? General knowledge of methods of adapting instruction, equipment and tools for students with special needs. ? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. ? Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to communicate with school personnel, students, and parents while complying with the confidentiality requirements in local, state, and federal policies and statutes. ? Physical ability (able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally) and dexterity to perform the duties and responsibilities of the job, such as, walk, lift, stoop, stand, grasp, kneel, crouch and key requiring repetitive motions. ? Physical ability to lift students of various weights independently and with share responsibilities.
