About this role

Job Summary: The ASL Interpreter is responsible for providing accurate, professional interpretation services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in a PreK-12 educational environment. This role ensures that students have equal access to educational opportunities, including classroom instruction, extracurricular activities, and other school-related events, by interpreting spoken English into American Sign Language (ASL) and vice versa. This is a 10-month position. Key Responsibilities:

• Interpretation Services: Provide sign language interpretation during classroom lessons, meetings, discussions, and other school-related activities. Faithfully facilitate language between students and staff.

• Student Support: Facilitate communication between students and staff, ensuring that students who are deaf or hard of hearing can fully engage in academic and social interactions.

• Collaboration: Work closely with teachers, special education staff, counselors, and other support personnel to ensure that the educational needs of deaf or hard of hearing students are met.

• Documentation: Maintain appropriate records related to interpreting services, including logs of interpretation hours and student progress notes.

• Professional Development: Participate in ongoing training, professional development, and meetings to enhance skills and knowledge in educational interpreting, deaf culture, and ASL.

• Confidentiality: Ensure the confidentiality and privacy of students' personal and educational information in accordance with school policies and legal guidelines.

• Assistive Technology Support: When needed, assist in the use of assistive listening devices or other technology designed to enhance communication for students with hearing impairments.

• Adaptation: Modify interpreting techniques to fit the age and developmental level of the student(s) being served, including adaptations for content complexity and communication preferences.

Qualifications:

• Education & Certification:

• High school diploma required; a bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred.

• Certification as an ASL interpreter (e.g., RID, EIPA, NIC, VQAS)

• VQAS Level III required or EIPA 3.0 with the ability to get a 3.5 within 2 years from date of hire.

• Knowledge of K-12 educational systems, including curriculum and classroom environments.

• Experience:

• Previous experience as an ASL interpreter in a K-12 educational setting or similar environment is preferred.

• Experience working with children and youth, particularly those with disabilities, is highly desirable.

• Skills & Abilities:

• Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledge of Deaf culture.

• Strong communication skills, both in ASL and written English.

• Ability to interpret in real-time across a range of classroom settings and subject areas.

• Ability to remain neutral and impartial in interpreting situations.

• Strong organizational and time management skills.

• Sensitivity and respect for cultural differences and diverse communication needs.
