• Diploma: high school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Ability and willingness to carry out oral and written instructions.
• Ability to understand students with special needs and demonstrates an aptitude / competence for the work to be performed.
• Ability to assist physically handicapped students (braces, wheelchairs, crutches, car seats, etc.).
• Ability and willingness to pursue training in ESE and pre-K field.
• Such alternatives to the above preferred qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.
Performance Responsibilities:
• Works closely with the transportation department and school staff in the safe and efficient transportation of students with special needs.
• Checks all restraints on vehicle prior to student loading, ensuring that restraints are in good repair and ready for use.
• Adjusts special restraints as needed for the safety and comfort of students.
• Works with driver in operating the side lift for loading and unloading students in wheelchairs and, with the help of the driver, secures the wheelchairs and/or car seats into place on the bus.
• Is familiar with the responsibilities of the bus driver as these overlap with the attendants', including information such as stop location, route, student IEP, and/or student management concerns.
• Assists driver in maintaining discipline on the bus.
• Assists driver in all emergencies.
• Attends all required safety and training sessions, as required.
• Complies with all written official policies of the Transportation Department, Charlotte County School Board policies, and regulations of the State Board of Education.
• Maintains effective working relationships with other employees, parents, and public.
• Performs other job related functions as may be assigned.
