Job Summary: Assists the school bus driver in providing safe transportation of pupils with special transportation needs to and from public schools and various activities, providing help to the school bus driver; loading/securing wheelchairs on the bus; securing passengers in their seats; and assisting students boarding and exiting the school bus. Special needs Medicaid record keeping. Skills and Requirements

• Ability to operate PC computer and use district-adopted software

• Ability to prioritize and multitask; ability to work accurately under pressure with frequent interruptions.

• Exercise good judgment, diplomacy, and empathy when interacting with bus drivers, students, and his/her family.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with children.

• General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use email.

• High school diploma or equivalent.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

• Develops appropriate relationships with staff, students, and parents.

• Assist the bus driver in maintaining discipline on the school bus; monitor and assist students while the bus is in operation.

• Consult with and assist bus driver in the documentation of student information, recordkeeping, and completing route surveys

• Assists young and/or disabled students in boarding and/or exiting the school bus

• Assist your driver in assuring seat belts, harnesses, and wheelchair clamps are secured as required.

• Assist in the safe bus transportation and care of student's medical, physical, and/or behavioral needs as described in his/her Individual Education Program (IEP) plan.

• May be required to lift and/or move students as necessary for transportation purposes.

• Coordinate seating of pre-kindergarten students with your bus driver as required by State Transportation Guidelines.

• Tends to the special needs and conditions of each student.

• Maintain current knowledge of Emergency Evacuation procedures.

• Assist handicapped children on and off the bus; assure the student's parent/guardian meets the bus before leaving the bus stop.

• Help maintain a clean and orderly bus daily.

• Learn basic operation of a school bus in case of emergency.

• Operates and communicates with 2-way radio if needed.

• Communicate with the supervisor/dispatch any observed changes in the student's behavior, medical or physical condition.

• Receive overall direction from Transportation Supervisor or Dispatch regarding such matters as assigned hours, appropriateness of student discipline measures, and procedures for carrying out assigned duties.

• Receive direction from the assigned bus driver regarding safety and emergency procedures to be followed in assisting the driver.

• Perform other related duties as required or assigned

• Assist the substitute driver with directions as needed

• Assists the school bus driver in conducting scheduled emergency evacuation drills on the school bus.

• Presents a neat, clean, and courteous appearance to parents, students, school personnel, and the general public

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Must be alert at all times and able to respond to emergencies. Must be able to lift and carry a child up to 50 pounds or drag. Must be able to operate the special equipment on the school bus (wheelchair lift, wheelchair tie-downs, car seat, etc.). No use of a cell phone while students are on the bus unless of an emergency.
