OTTUMWA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS Ottumwa, Iowa POSITION TITLE: Nurse, full time REPORTS TO: Building Principal Purpose Statement: To maintain and/or improve the health status of students, thus enabling them to profit fully from their educational experiences and to promote optimum health status and lifestyles for all students through joint efforts of the home, school and community. QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current State of Iowa Licensure and current CPR certification required.

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN) recommended, RN is required

• Three (3) years nursing experience required; pediatrics or teaching preferred/ helpful.

• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists in developing school health program.

• Performs health screen activities and maintains records with follow-up and referral of children.

• Assists in the prevention and control of illness including communicable disease and other infections.

• Participates in and gives leadership to planning for the provision of proper emergency care and first aid for sudden illness or accident incurred under school jurisdiction.

• Serves as a liaison between the school, the home and community agencies in improving the health of school children.

• Participates as a nurse educator and a health resource person for the school and community health program for the pupils, school personnel and parents.

• Participates in planning the modification of the school program to meet the special health needs of children.

• Assists in guidance and counseling of students with health problems.

• Advises or recommends to parents the need for medical care of ill or injured students.

• Contributes to inservice health educational programs for teachers and other school personnel.

• Participates in faculty meetings as needed.

• Attends workshops and meetings to promote professional growth.

• Follows local, state, and federal laws, policies and guidelines regarding school health programs.

• Consults with school administrators to establish, review and revise policy and procedures for a comprehensive school health program.

• Follows accepted standards of nursing practice.

• Develops individual health plans for students using the nursing process.

• Any other such duties that may be assigned.
