About this role
Job Summary: The job of Custodian was established for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; performing repairs and preventive maintenance as well as groundskeeping duties; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure as well as scheduling and supervising a custodial crew in conjunction with the building principal. Essential Functions
• Cleans assigned facility and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, cafeteria, libraries, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
• Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. unlocks doors, removing snow, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
• Maintains supplies and equipment to ensure the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
• Performs routine groundskeeping duties (e.g. watering, trimming, spraying, fertilizing, weeding, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
• Ensure maintenance of a clean and orderly building.
• Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities, meals and events.
• Performs maintenance on custodial equipment, classroom furniture and fixtures for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
• Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer construction.
• Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, vandalism, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
• Assists students and staff as is customary, reasonable and required.
• Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
• Complies with applicable district, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective function of the unit.
Job Requirements
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated ability to assume responsibility for a clean and orderly building in compliance with standards and regulations.
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
• Demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with colleagues, supervisors, teaching staff, students, parents and citizens.
• No physical limitations which would prevent the applicant from satisfactorily performing job duties, including lifting, climbing ladders, etc., within recognized standards and limits.
• Decision making, team building and problem solving skills along with the ability to work with little or no supervision.
• Ability to lift, push or pull 65 pounds, stoop, stand or bend for long periods of time.
• Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job to include methods of industrial cleaning, safety practices and procedures.
• Other qualifications may be reasonably required for this position.
• Must successfully pass background check and physical exam.
• Class B CDL with bus endorsement preferred.
• Must be able to obtain a commercial applicator license and certification from the state of Iowa.
