The Burrillville School Department is seeking qualified candidates for a part time position of Attendance Officer for the Burrillville School District. This position will begin in the 2026-2027 school year. TOWN OF BURRILLVILLE Burrillville School Department Position Description Title: K-12 Attendance Officer Supervisor: Superintendent Department: School Department ______________________________________________________________________________ GENERAL PURPOSE: The Attendance Officer is responsible for enforcing compulsory school attendance laws and reducing absenteeism and truancy in the school district. The Attendance Officer plays an important role in enforcing compulsory attendance, identifying root causes of absenteeism, and implementing solutions to remove barriers that keep students out of school. Performing this job with compassion and cultural awareness is critical for supporting students in vulnerable situations. ______________________________________________________________________________ GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Makes home visits to confirm residency at the request of building administration. 2. Investigates cases of chronic absenteeism and truancy across all grade levels in collaboration with building principals. a. Gathers relevant information from parents, guardians, teachers, and students. b. Makes home visits to determine causes of absenteeism and develop attendance improvement plans. c. Issues written notifications to parents and guardians for violations of compulsory attendance laws. 3. Develops relationships with students and families to understand reasons for truancy and provide needed supports. 4. Refers truant students and families to counseling, tutoring, mentoring or other services to remove attendance barriers. 5. Coordinates with principals and attendance clerks to monitor and address attendance issues; responds promptly to truancy petitions from building administration/guidance. 6. Maintains detailed records and provides statistical tracking and analysis of absenteeism and truancy cases; documents cases of truancy in a shared spreadsheet/SIS so that progress on cases can be tracked by building and district administration. a. Maintains open and timely communication with families to ensure that families are aware of court dates and other important meetings. b. Makes recommendations on policy changes to reduce truancy and drive improved attendance. 8. Represents the district in court cases regarding school attendance law violations when necessary. ______________________________________________________________________________ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelor’s degree in education, social work or related field preferred. 2. 2+ years’ experience in education, counseling, social services or a related field preferred. 3. Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local education and attendance laws. 4. Strong mediation, interpersonal, and communication skills. 5. Proficiency with technology; ability to maintain accurate records and collect statistical data.
