About this role

General Maintenance Worker Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor Primary Goal: Maintain school buildings and grounds in orderly, neat, safe and operable condition. Essential Job Functions

• Performs tasks to maintain buildings and grounds in safe and operable condition

• Inspects equipment and facilities, and recommends repair or replacement action to supervisor.

• Regulates heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical use of fuel, water, and electricity.

• Checks all building entrances/exits to ensure that they are working properly

• Obtains equipment, tools and materials required for completion of assigned work.

• Inspects equipment and facilities, and recommends repair or replacement action to supervisor

• Prepares and maintains records to document work and repairs as requested.

• Assist with mowing, pruning shrubs and trees, removes damaged leaves, branches, or twigs

• Sprays lawn, plants, shrubs, and trees with fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides, using hand or automatic sprayer

• Performs grounds maintenance duties, using tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, spreaders, lawn roller, etc

• Clearing snow and ice, and related tasks.

• Additional duties - performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

• Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including saws, drills, routers, planers, sanders, jointers, and stationary power equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of fundamental tools, materials, practices, maintenance, methods and procedures in the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades.

• Knowledge of building code conformance standards for carpentry, plumbing, electricity, electrical installation, and repair, preferred

• Knowledge of occupational safety and health laws and regulations.

• Ability to follow oral or written work orders from supervisor, and to coordinate work with others.

• Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagrammatic form.

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure.

• Ability to describe orally or in writing maintenance or repair problems as needed.

• Ability to troubleshoot, problem solve and resolve electrical or electricity issues.

• Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.

• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.

• Knowledge of grounds maintenance equipment, tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, spreaders, lawn roller, etc

• Ability to complete basic carpentry tasks

• Ability in decision making to include determining the best method for completing a job in a safe and efficient manner

Safety Requirements

• Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used.

• Wears appropriate safety gear

• Frequent travel between schools, or between schools and central offices required.

Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards

• Physical ability to lift/carry 20-50 lbs

• Ability to withstand heights and work in crawl spaces.

• Typical risks associated with using tools of the trade.

• Occasional strenuous physical work.

• Occasional work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma

• Valid North Carolina driver's license required. Class A, B, or CDL is preferred.

• Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-month Non-Exempt position, Salary in accordance with the state salary schedule based on experience, knowledge, and skills with a minimum pay of $15.00 per hour.
