PURPOSE This position is for an EL teacher who will design and implement language instruction and intervention for students who are identified as English Learners (EL) and enrolled in Columbia Area Career Center (CACC) classes and programs. The EL teacher will collaborate with career center instructors to provide integrated language support that promotes student success in both academic and technical coursework. Additionally, the teacher will mentor EL students throughout their career center experience, helping them prepare for and successfully complete industry-recognized certification assessments while fostering their language development and career readiness.
The EL teacher will be expected to develop individualized educational plans for each EL student and develop and deliver group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines within all content areas. The EL teacher will work collaboratively with classroom teachers in a capacity that includes, but is not limited to, joining professional learning teams, helping differentiate instruction and assessment of EL students, and providing on-going support to classroom teachers as they implement EL strategies. The EL teacher will administer the annual English proficiency test, if needed. The EL teacher must maintain all state and district required documentation on EL students and will serve as a liaison among the school, classroom teachers, parents/guardians of EL students, the district EL office, and district interpreters. This position may require travel among schools. EL teachers are district teachers who are assigned to buildings to meet the needs of EL students; therefore, building placement may change and EL teachers may be required to split between buildings to meet the needs of EL students across the district. EL teachers placed at Douglass High School may teach EL content and enrichment classes, in addition to English Language Development (ELD) classes.
Note: All duties described in this job description are intended to be fulfilled either in online or in-person classes, or a combination of both, as determined by student and district need. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
• Serves as lead teacher, co-teacher, and intervention teacher for EL students in language development classes and all other content areas.
• Serves as liaison among the school, classroom teachers, parents/guardians, students, district personnel, and community organizations that support EL students and families.
• Secures language interpreters for parent meetings and school events, as needed.
• Provides support for EL students as needed in district, state, and industry certification testing while maintaining testing protocols and procedures outlined in each specific assessment.
• Works with counselors to support CACC students in their post-graduate plans.
• Administers annual English Language Proficiency (ELP) assessment to all EL students on caseload and administers EL screening test to students who are new to the school (elementary only). Maintains proper testing protocol regarding these tests.
• Maintains accurate records on EL students regarding progress monitoring, language acquisition, reclassification, and all other aspects required for EL students.
• Follows all administrative directives and federal, state, and district guidelines and policies regarding EL students and collaboration with their parents/guardians.
• Works with classroom and content teachers to differentiate instruction, assignments, and assessments and accurately assign grades to the work of EL students in their classes.
• Provides professional development and coaching to classroom and content area teachers in assigned building(s) as needed and to the extent possible.
• Attends professional development sessions for EL teachers and staff.
• Meets and instructs assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated both individually and collaboratively.
• Plans and implements a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests and abilities of all students using data-driven decision-making.
• Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of all students.
• Prepares for assigned classes and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor.
• Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
• Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes and communicates clear objectives to students for all lessons and units.
• Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of individuals or student groups involved.
• Collaborates with administrators, colleagues, and parents in a positive and productive manner.
• Strives to implement by instruction and action, the District's philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
• Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
• Evaluates the learning problems of students on a regular basis, seeking assistance of District specialists as needed and/or required.
• Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
• Assists the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure while maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and appropriate manner.
• Makes provisions for being available to students, staff, and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
• Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s) where applicable.
• Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
• Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as needed.
• Understands and adheres to Board policies and procedures.

For information on polices, regulations and values, visit http://www.cpsk12.org REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS Reports To: Director of English Learners and Migrant Education and building principal(s) Supervises: N/A QUALIFICATIONS Minimum: Appropriate academic preparation to be certified by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Valid Missouri Teaching Certificate in appropriate content area. Missouri ESOL endorsement is required. Preferred: Prior teaching experience either at the elementary or secondary level preferred. Bilingual preferred. Familiarity with industry certification assessments at CACC, standardized tests, ability to analyze data, and experience with special education would be considered assets. Excellent computer skills required. Knowledgeable in SIOP and/or other best practices for EL learning.
