About this role

Applicants should supply suitable character references and be prepared to complete a Garda vetting application form. Disability Support involves working with adults with physical and sensory disabilities as they develop skills to live more independently. The Disability Support Assistant will work with the tutor and students to establish how best to accommodate each student. They will shadow the tutor in providing these supports and, as they gain confidence and experience, the Disability Support Assistant will help individual students by scribing, note-taking and assisting students with practical tasks such as cookery, shopping and using public transport. The participant will become familiar with the day to day running of a training programme, assisting to develop individual learning plans, tailoring training to individual needs and providing support to students. Through this work, the Disability Support Assistant will learn new skills in developing and implementing activities and supporting students in carrying out these activities. They will be trained in the use of equipment and health and safety procedures in the workplace. They will be instructed in how best to support individual learners as they develop their skills and this will enhance communication, interpersonal and IT skills. The Assistant will be assigned a Mentor to ensure a positive work experience.. This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP.
