About this role
Applicants should supply suitable character references and be prepared to complete a Garda vetting application form. The participant will undertake a supportive role while shadowing a fully qualified senior fitter. They will assist with setting up work areas, laying down protective dust sheets, and staging materials such as frames, glass units, and trims in preparation for installation. Under direct and constant supervision, the participant will observe and assist in the removal of old timber or uPVC frames and the levelling and fixing of new energy-efficient units. Their involvement will remain closely guided at all times to ensure a safe and structured learning experience. At no point will the participant be expected to carry out structural fixings, handle complex structural elements such as lintels, or be left unsupervised on a job site. Their role is strictly supportive and educational, with a clear focus on maintaining safety while allowing for appropriate skill development. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this placement, the participant will have gained a foundational understanding of domestic and commercial window/door installation. They will learn how to safely use basic hand and power tools, understand building regulations regarding thermal efficiency and safety glass, read basic installation blueprints, and develop strong customer-facing communication skills.. This is a training and work experience opportunity; no prior experience in this role is necessary. Accredited and/or sector-recognised training will be provided to support your placement. Participants are eligible to participate in the WPEP QQI Work Experience Module which was developed by the Education & Training Boards in collaboration with the Department of Social Protection. This optional module will fulfil your accredited training requirements for the WPEP. Accredited or Sector-Recognised Training (24 Hours) • Safe Pass – KTC training centre - 8 Hours • Manual Handling Certification - KTC training centre - 4 Hours • Working at Heights Awareness - KTC training centre - 4 Hours • Lift platform training - KTC training centre – 8 hours General Training (40 Hours) • Tool Identification and Workshop Safety (8 Hours) - Safe handling, maintenance, and storage of specialized fitting tools (e.g., percussion drills, glass suction lifters, silicone guns). • Materials and Measurements Training (12 Hours) - Learning how to accurately measure openings, understanding different profile types (uPVC, Aluminium, Timber), and identifying various glass types (double/triple glazing, toughened, laminated safety glass). • Sealing and Insulation Techniques (10 Hours) - Supervised practice in applying expanding foam insulation, backing cords, and perfecting internal/external silicone sealing for weatherproofing. • Customer Service and Site Preparation (10 Hours) - Training on how to interact professionally with homeowners, executing pre-job risk assessments, and proper post-job clean-up procedures.
