Job summary
The appointed fellows will provide senior surgical input to emergency general surgery patients at all stages from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. Duties include oncall at middle grade level with access to emergency theatre if the fellow is on call or assessment/admission of emergencies in A&E, surgical assessment unit/ SCDU when on normal duties.
The successful candidates will be able to rotate between Upper GI and Lower GI with dedicated MDTS. We are the 4th largest colorectal cancer resection unit in the UK.

The fellows will be assessed through regular meetings with the clinical supervisors to make sure career progression and also the passionate to develop higher surgical skills despite in a permanent post.

Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Eligible for full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise at the time of appointment. MB ChB, MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. Satisfactory completion of ST1-2 training, or equivalent. Membership examination with the relevant UK Royal College. ALS Certification. ATLS Certification.
Desirable
Higher degree. Attendance at recognised management courses. Formal qualification in teaching/education.
Clinical Experience Essential
Completed at least four years full time postgraduate training (or equivalent gained on part time basis) or have equivalent experience and competencies. Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required at CT/ST3 level in relevant specialty. Equivalent years experience in a relevant specialty from other medical grades including from overseas will also be accepted. Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams. Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, within specialty and sufficient experience. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Desirable
Previous experience working in the NHS within the specialty of minimum of 12 months. Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making.
Teaching Experience Essential
Ability to organise and deliver teaching across the whole undergraduate curriculum. Ability to teach clinical skills to medical, nursing staff and other disciplines. Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates. Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation and completion of audit projects.

Other Post Requirements Essential
An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues. Able to meet the travel requirements of the job and return to the hospital within 30 minutes when undertaking non-resident on call duties.
Research Experience Essential
Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems. An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives.
Desirable
Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years. Evidence of having undertaken original research.
