Credence has an immediate need for a Mid to Senior COBOL Developer / Solutions Architect to support our AI/ML team. This role is critical to bridging legacy COBOL systems and modern cloud native architectures to work on-site in McLean VA.

The candidate will act as a technical lead and translator, working across legacy codebases, modernization tools, and modern engineering teams to ensure accurate business logic extraction, successful code conversion, and validated operational outcomes.

Legacy System Analysis & Business Logic Extraction

Analyze COBOL, JCL, and DB2 components of legacy systems to understand existing business processes and data flowsCOBOL experience on the IBM AS 400 is an immediate must have specifically IBM I (AS 400) and Z/os later in Phase IISupport reverse engineering efforts to extract and validate business rules, interfaces, and non‑functional requirementsCollaborate with Government SMEs and sustainers to ensure functional accuracy and mission alignmentModernization & Solution Architecture

Guide modernization efforts using AWS Transform, Reimagine, Kiro, and/or Blu Age, as appropriateSupport forward engineering of modernized services (Java, C#, or Node.js) based on extracted business logicContribute to defining cloud native, microservices-based architectures aligned with DoW standardsIntegration, Testing & Validation

Support generation and execution of automated test cases to validate converted code against legacy outputsParticipate in User Acceptance Testing (UAT) Documentation & Knowledge Transfer

Produce clear technical documentation describing legacy behavior and modernized solutionsSupport knowledge transfer to Government personnel to reduce long-term reliance on scarce COBOL skillsRequirements

Must have a minimum of 5+ years of hands-on experience with COBOL in large, mission critical systemsMust have experience with mainframe and IBM I (AS/400) environments, including JCL and DB2Must hold demonstrated ability to understand and document complex business logic from legacy systemsStrong communication skills and ability to collaborate with mixed legacy and modern engineering teams

Desired / Preferred Qualifications

Experience with legacy system modernization or refactoring projectsFamiliarity with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and modern application architecturesExposure to Java, C#, or Node.js in modernization or re‑engineering effortsUnderstanding of logistics, supply chain, or sustainment systemsExperience working alongside automated code transformation tools (e.g., AWS Transform, Reimagine, and/or Blu Age)Experience working in DoW (formerly DoD) or Federal enterprise environmentsPrior involvement with DoW (formerly DoD) systems preferredMust be a US Citizen and with the ability to obtain a Defense Secret ClearanceActive Clearance is preferredOnsite: McLean VA Benefits
