Job summary
Velindre Cancer Service work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, who together, provide information and specialist care for patients who have received a cancer diagnosis. The cancer support worker service provides a central point of contact for all cancer patients, family members and carers. Cancer support worker post holders, work alongside the clinical nurse specialist team, to enhance patient care and communication.
Main duties of the job
Under the supervision of a Clinical Nurse Specialist the Cancer Support worker:
Act as a central point of contact for patients and triage calls to the clinical nurse specialist, escalating clinically important calls.
Support patient contact by signposting patient's, family members and carers to the relevant support groups and other organisations.
Guide and advise patients as they journey through our hospital(s), ultimately improving patient experience.

Skills Essential
Ability to communicate verbally in a clear and effective way, both face to face and over the telephone, additionally having good written communication skills. Ability to deal effectively with a wide range of people (e.g. Patients, Carers, Clinicians, Nurses and other professionals from all sectors of health and social care) in a helpful manner. Ability to prioritise workload, re- prioritise efficiently and work to deadlines. Ability to react to changing situations and use problem solving skills as required, being able to learn new skills and gain knowledge. Ability and willingness to handle highly confidential information without compromising confidentiality or trust, working to a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Desirable
Welsh Speaker (Level 1) or willingness to work towards. To have a friendly and helpful disposition with a desire to follow tasks through to resolution.
Qualifications Essential
GCSE English language and Mathematics (Grades A-C) or equivalent. NVQ 4 or 3 plus additional training to diploma level equivalent or relevant experience. Understanding of patient-centred care. Understanding of basic medical terminology. Ability and willingness to handle highly confidential information Relevant health or social care experience at band 3 or equivalent. To independently work unsupervised within set boundaries, and as part of a team Experience of multi-Professional working. Use of IT systems.
Desirable
Communication skills training Knowledge of cancer and cancer treatments.
