Job summary
The Integrated Nutrition and Dietetic Service is based across acute and community settings. This primarily based in Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.
The Dietetic Support Worker assists the dietitians in certain aspects of this work including:
Liaising with the dietitians and following plans of care for patient follow up
Actively participate within group education under the supervision of the dietitian.
Data entry regarding product orders
Assisting with the daily supply of dietetic products to wards and departments
A working knowledge of different products and their clinical use is required.
Assisting selected patients on the wards to choose preferred and clinically suitable food and drinks, under the supervision of a dietitian.
Responsible for the service ordering of supplies and consumables.
To ensure stock rotation/monitoring, processing electronic orders, liaison with Stores Department as appropriate.

Provide follow-up support to selected patients who have been seen first by the dietitian and monitor nutritional care plan
Provide support to dietitians regarding future menu development
Gather information for referrals made to the dietitian
Actively participate within group education under the supervision of the dietitian

Understand the scope of the role and know the limits of practice and when to seek advice.
2. Communication and Working Relationships
Deal courteously, sensitively and efficiently with incoming telephone calls.
Provide routine information to patients and carers and know how to overcome barriers to understanding.
With training be able to confidently communicate with patients with communication difficulties including verbal and non-verbal communication.
Maintain strict confidentiality of personal information under Data Protection Act.
Communicate clearly and efficiently with Stores, Finance, porters, ward clerks, nursing staff, suppliers of dietary products and equipment.
Participate in meetings as required.
Report to senior dietitian any risks or incidents.
3. RESPONSIBILITY FOR PATIENT CARE
Process and complete the therapeutic diet menu requests for in-patients at Stepping Hill Hospital and ensure they are delivered to the Catering Department on time. Liaise with dietitian and Catering Department.
Assist patients on the wards to choose and consume clinically appropriate food and drinks from the relevant therapeutic diet menu, under the supervision of a dietitian. Provide follow up support to selected patients who have been seen first by the dietitian.
Ensure that food hygiene and Health and Safety procedures are undertaken and adhered to.
Assist the supervising dietitian in developing nutrition care plans to patients and the assistant will ensure that these are adhered to or feedback when they are not
Review patient care plans as deemed appropriate by dietitians
Under the supervision of the dietitian, communicate nutrition care plans to patients and/or carers.
Identify individuals with nutrition needs, using pre-determined criteria e.g., nutrition screening.
Assist in evaluating information from patient nutrition charts and/or diet history.
Assist in the follow up of patients including through possible telephone review.
4. PLANNING AND ORGANISING
Plan and prioritise own workload under direction of senior dietitian.
Assist dietitians with the arrangements for patients on tube feeds. This may include completing computerised registration form, telephone calls and faxes to GP surgeries, community dietitians and enteral feeding company. Enter data as needed into log tables.
Ensure up-to-date knowledge of appropriate choices on therapeutic diet menus (e.g. gluten free, milk free, nut free, low potassium, low salt, low/high protein, modified texture dysphagia menus).
Ensure up-to-date knowledge of the range of products available for therapeutic diets, feeds and feed equipment
To enhance service delivery by improving the process of duties.
Office administration: retrieve and accurately file patient records for hospital clinics, data entry, photocopying where required
Provide cover for the secretary during leave which may include organising out-patient appointments and typing letters
May be required to cover Dietetic Support Worker role within community setting, as/when required
5. Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
Effective communication skills with patients,carersand professionals.
Ability to manage own workload and prioritise tasks appropriately.
Basic IT skills including use of clinical systems, email and documentation.
7. PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL EFFORT
Assisting the with Trusts supply of therapeutic dietary products and equipment. This includes monitoring stock usage and orders, arranging daily distribution to wards and departments
Authorised signatory to request urgent deliveries of supplements, tube feeds, other relevant products (Borderline Substances) or equipment.
Assist the dietitians with monitoring of the contracted company performance against contract.
Report any irregularities or misuse of assets to the Dietitian Team Leader or Nutrition and Dietetic Service Lead.
Responsible for achieving, with other staff, a near, orderly and tidy office environment.
Responsibility for Policy and Service Development and Implementation
Provide support to dietitians with future menu development.
Communicate to the dietitians issues requiring further development.
Assist in the development of patient advisory literature.
Assist in quality assurance for care and delivery of service to the Trust.
Propose changes in working practices or procedures for own area.
Participate in quality improvement initiatives within the department

To work as an active, efficient and supportive member of the Nutrition and Dietetic Service staff across several integrated teams.
Responsibilities for Teaching and Training
Assist in the development and delivery of education and training programmes.
To support new/inexperienced staff members by participating in their induction programme/ training as required.
Responsibilities for data and information resources
Accurately record statistics on activity and audit in compliance with Trust and department requirements if required.
Complete nutritional analysis of recipes and menus as directed by senior dietitian.
Research, Development and Audit
Participate in departmental audit as required. Participate in mealtime observation audits.
Physical Skills and Effort
Manoeuvre goods and equipment and assist people to move, in accordance with manual handling regulations and good practice. Standard keyboard skills required.
If successful this vacancy will require a Standard DBS check at a cost of £26.90. This cost will be deducted from your first Trust salary
In addition to this it will be a condition of your employment that you will join the DBS update service and pay the annual subscription fee of £16.
