Job Description Summary

The individual will conduct statistical and data mining analyses for identifying and evaluating early-life biomarkers predictive of asthma development in children and other immune-mediated disorders of childhood. Major responsibilities include (1) designing statistical methodologies for new and ongoing research projects-selecting/devising study designs, and developing study procedures (2) selecting/designing appropriate analytic and evaluation procedures, especially pertaining to large data sets from DNA methylation, RNA-Seq and microbiome sequencing experiments (3) contributing to the education and training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, providing direction in relation to data analysis of projects (4) writing research proposals, reports and manuscripts for publication and presentation of findings at conferences and meetings.

Organizational Status

The individual reports to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Stuart Turvey. The biostatistician will work with a team of health researchers including clinicians, scientists, trainees, post-doctoral fellows and research staff on joint research projects. Work will also be part of larger national and international collaborative projects.

Work Performed

-Performs data cleansing and statistical analysis on clinical and environmental data together with multi-omics datasets including (but not limited to) DNA methylation, transcriptomic, microbiome sequencing reads.

-Develops complex statistical models and strategies for the analysis of biological and other relevant data.

-Collaborates with other researchers and statisticians to share knowledge and strategies for data analysis.

-Develops, implements, tests and documents scripts and procedures to perform analyses.

-Develops data dictionaries.

-Develops and implements techniques for graphical visualization of the data and statistical results.

-Presents research findings to the team and investigators, and integrates feedback.

-Presents research findings at conferences and related research events.

-Prepares content for academic manuscripts, technical reports, research proposals, and presentations.

-Participates in the evaluation, selection, planning and integration of technology and software solutions to further research goals.

-Keeps up to date with new application, technology, and algorithmic developments and supports best practices in bioinformatics research.

-Performs other related duties, as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors could cause serious implications as project directions and outcomes will depend on the analyses performed. The incumbent will require minimal supervision and will exercise independent judgement regarding scheduling and timely completion of tasks.

Supervision Received

The individual reports to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Stuart Turvey. The biostatistician will work with a team of health researchers including clinicians, scientists, trainees, post-doctoral fellows and research staff on joint research projects. This team will be both local as well as a dispersed national and international collaborative network.

Supervision Given

It is expected that this position will assist with the education and training of clinical trainees, undergraduate and graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, providing direction in relation to data analysis of projects.

Minimum Qualifications -Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of three years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

PhD in numerical modeling or statistics preferred. Experience developing and implementing data-processing workflows. Experience with statistical analysis techniques and scripting languages (R preferred). Experience working with linked health care data and expertise in advanced statistical techniques is essential. Ability to analyze and interpret data, determine implications, and provide recommendations. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills are required.
