Job Summary The purpose of this position is to function as a research coordinator in the conduct of a study of occupational vaccination among BC health care workers HCWs) with a focus on measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. The study would address the barriers and concerns of HCWs about retrieval and sharing of their immunization records with their employer and about being vaccinated to fulfill workplace health and safety guidelines, and associated contextual issues including the intersection between occupational health policy and the perceptions, beliefs and needs of health care workers related to benefits and risks of these requirements and processes.
The incumbent will contribute to research project design and development, including literature search and review, development of the study design/ methods/ data collection instruments, completion of documentation required for ethics submission, recruitment of participants, coordination of qualitative data collection, data management and analysis, including document analysis; assigning and checking work of other research assistants and student transcribers (if required); preparing, composing, editing and proofing documents such contracts, and scientific materials including drafting of abstracts, presentations and manuscripts for publication and knowledge translation products including for government officials and policy makers. They would facilitate communication among key informants, study participants, and administrators required for the study, as well as study team members. The incumbent will also undertake other general research duties as required. Some travel may be required for research purposes.
Organizational Status The Research Coordinator will report to Co-Investigators, Dr. Monika Naus and Dr. Devon Greyson, and will work closely with other research staff and students as required. This position is located at the UBC School of Population and Public Health.
Housed within the Faculty of Medicine, the School of Population and Public Health (SPPH) is an innovative unit that encompasses many of the health-related groupings at UBC as a collaborative venture. The School is structured around four divisions: Occupational and Environmental Health; Health Services and Policy; Epidemiology, Biostatistics and Public Health Practice; and Health in Populations. The resulting mix of professions and disciplines is seen as a means of connecting individuals and learners to galvanize the relationship between health research, public health and health services and to enhance learning.
Work Performed
• Provide direct research facilitation and strtegic input to the Study Team’s Co-PIs, in consultation with research partners and other agencies.
• Lead communication and meetings with multiple sources and individuals such as research team members, key informants, data providers and stewards, other research assistants and students (if required), health professional and health authority organizations, and research collaborators.
• Manage the preparation of the research design plan, modification and development; drafting applications and materials such as ethics submissions, consent forms, questionnaires and budgets; coordinating contracted services e.g., interviewers for qualitative data collection, as required.
• Prepare applications for non-academic review committees, and communicate with committee representatives regarding research ethics issues, as required.
• Conduct in depth literature reviews, including composing search strategies, collecting and analyzing documentation, and other literature-based research.
• Oversee and facilitate participant recruitment, data collection, management, and analysis.
• Establish data collection processes and based on the accumulated data conduct ethnographic observations, in-depth interviews, and other forms of empirical fieldwork or manage staff contracted to undertake these activities.
• Prepare data analysis reports for the Co-PIs and other members of the research team and collaborate with PIs in the development of data analysis plans.
• In consultation with the CoPIs and other members of the research team, conduct qualitative data analysis using NVivo analysis software.
• Train and supervise research assistants and student transcribers, and communicate expectations when delegating assignments.
• Oversee and report on project budget and forecasts.
• Draft and coordinate input into and finalization of reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
• Prepare and deliver presentations for health professionals, academic conferences, and community-based events.
• Conduct other general research duties as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement This position exercises professional judgment and initiative in the management of various training and research projects. The incumbent is accountable for the efficient management of projects. Errors made could influence the ability of researchers to interpret data correctly, delay the timely completion of work, and thus compromise the results of research projects. This would impact the credibility of the Co-PIs and other research team investigators.
This position will be responsible for access, collection, use and disclosure of personal information in accordance with the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (RSBC 1996) and other UBC privacy and security policies. This position requires employees to work under strict confidentiality requirements; internal procedures and policies to protect personal information must be followed, and adherence to these requirements will be regularly reviewed by the employer.
Supervision Received The Research Coordinator will receive primary direction from the Co-PIs, Drs. Naus and Greyson.
Supervision Given The incumbent may assign and check the work of research assistants and students.
Minimum Qualifications Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree in Population Health/ Epidemiology/ Behavioural Sciences, Information Science, Communication or a related field preferred.
• Training and experience in quantitative and qualitative methodologies, especially health-related ethnographic, and community-based approaches.
• Experience in designing and conducting literature reviews.
• Experience in working with multidisciplinary, multi-site research teams and collaborative community-based projects an asset.
• Knowledge of theories of human behavior, population health, and race/ language/ ethnicity/ sex/gender issues related to health behaviour is essential.
• Knowledge of community health issues is essential.
• Familiarity with community-based and health services is preferred.
• Knowledge of Indigenous cultures, social issues, and services required.
• Knowledge of issues related to health care provision in settings outside of Metro Vancouver (e.g., rural communities) required.
• Experience with preparing and submitting applications academic research ethics boards preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload, handle multiple assignments effectively and meet deadlines.
• Demonstrated ability and experience in preparing correspondence, documents, reports, manuscripts, and communication materials.
• Excellent research skills, with an ability to conduct basic analysis of research data.
• Demonstrated computer literacy with Microsoft Office suite, citation management software (i.e., EndNote, Zotero), and database management skills (i.e., NVivo).
• Strong analytical and planning skills.
• Experience coding qualitative data.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
• Able to identify and relate to concerns of others and to exercise good judgment when resolving difficulties.
