About this role

The language tutoring position is responsible to assist other students in one-on-one sessions of thirty minutes out-of-class. Tutors will answer questions about course content taught in class including grammar explanations, pronunciation of vowels sounds, diphthongs and consonant combinations that change according to the language. Tutors can review student’s homework and guide them through it assisting in a couple of sentences, help in student’s presentations preparation and written and oral assignments. Tutors will promote language courses after they accomplish the tutoring administrative, pedagogical and technological training sessions, they need to participate in cultural events organize in class according to their time availability. Tutors report to the faculty tutoring coordinator.

Pursuant to the CBA, Academic Student Workers (ASWs) shall not be required to perform a service outside of the listing of required duties as noted above. ASWs are encouraged to notify their supervisors and contact person as soon as practicable during the academic term if they anticipate their total work assignment will exceed the terms of the assignment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Attend the administrative, pedagogical and technological tutoring training sessions for this objective they need to review all digital material sent previously for the training.

• Perform class visits of no more than fifteen minutes in every language class offered and introduce themselves. Explain students how to sign in STARFISH for a tutoring session and the services provided including the extra-credit benefit when performing four tutoring sessions (some language classes require only three sessions, it varies).

• Review, explain and guide students about material taught in class such as grammar structure, pronunciation of vowels, diphthongs and consonant combination sounds. Guide students by reviewing a couple of homework exercises. Tutors can assist students in their written and oral assignments, mini-projects and exam material review.

• Assist students in the oral and written language used for class presentations providing corrections if needed and constructive feedback.

• Facilitate interactive speaking and listening exercises to build a real-world conversation skill.

• Contact language professors to participate in cultural class events allowing students to integrate in foreign language culture customs and social conventions.

• Set up their STARFISH office hours according to the university academic calendar and remove it during holidays. Tutoring is only offer at the university.

• Submit their online timesheets for payment through My-Day application.

• Communicate immediately when a tutoring session has been cancelled. Contact the student and the program coordinator to inform about it.

• Inform the tutoring coordinator if students are not at tending sessions. Tutoring is a free service and if a student does not attend the session their tutoring privilege can be removed.

• Register all sessions performed in the tutoring excel track sheet provided every semester, indicating the day and time the session was performed and the student name too

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Native or near native fluency in the target language is desired, alongside strong English communication skills to clearly explain complex language rules.

• Experience as a prior tutor in high school or other institutions in the country or abroad is a plus.

• Strong and interpersonal skills such as patience, empathy, respect and tolerance to students diverse opinions.

• The tutoring job position is opened to students that are currently enrolled at the New School University only.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Applicants with advanced knowledge of literature, grammar, writing and speaking in the target language is a plus.

WORK MODE: Hybrid - Employees hired for this position primarily work remotely with the occasional on-campus presence required with advanced notice. Employees in this role will also be expected to use their best judgment to be on campus when necessary, in order to best fulfill the responsibilities of their job descriptions. #LI-DNI

Hourly Rate: $29.20

This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between SENS-UAW, Local 7902 and the University.

Responsibilities:

Tutors are responsible for setting up their office hours- calendar in STARFISH and perform class visits in the language class for no more than fifteen minutes. They need to attend the tutoring appointments and cancel them when a problem/emergency occurs. Cancelation needs to be done forty-eight hours ahead letting the student and department know about it. Tutors need to submit their timesheets for payment every week (Fridays at noon).
