About this role
As a Senior Process (Control & Instrumentation) Engineer, you will join Manchester/Derby/ Warrington team to support our activities within the Nuclear sector.
This role focuses on developing control philosophies, control narratives, and Safety & Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS) including HMI specifications that support the safety case, security case, and regulatory compliance across complex engineered systems.
The position requires strong process engineering capability, understanding of safety-critical design principles, and experience working in highly regulated environments where requirements evolve and designs change frequently.

Process Control & System Design
Develop control philosophies, narratives, and functional specifications for safety-critical systemsDefine control strategies, alarms, interlocks, and operating logicEnsure control behaviour follows safety principles such as defence-in-depth, redundancy, and failure toleranceSupport design, testing, validation, and commissioning of control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADSafety & Risk Management
Contribute to Safety and Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS) and safety/security casesSupport hazard analysis and risk assessments (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, SIL/LOPA)Work with safety, cybersecurity, and compliance teams to meet regulatory requirementsProcess Analysis & Instrumentation
Analyse process performance and system dynamics to support design decisionsIdentify improvements in efficiency, reliability, and stabilityDevelop instrumentation and measurement strategies aligned with functional safety requirements
Required Skills:
Strong background in process control, system behaviour, and optimisationProven experience developing control philosophies, control narratives, and functional specificationsExperience contributing engineering outputs to safety cases or security casesKnowledge of hazard identification and risk-based engineering methodologiesFamiliarity with instrumentation, sensors, and control system integrationRequired Qualifications:
A degree in Electrical, Instrumentation & Control, Process, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline, or equivalent military experienceDesirable Skills:
Experience within nuclear, energy, or large infrastructure projects.Familiarity with UK and international fire protection standards (e.g. BS 5839, NFPA, IEC).Knowledge of process instrumentation, control systems, or electrical schematics.Understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 45001, or equivalent safety and quality frameworks.Experience managing or auditing equipment suppliers on technical compliance and documentation quality.
