*POSITION SUMMARY: *
Reporting to the school?s administrative team, the Principal and Vice-Principal, the School Counsellor is a role model of the community and must exemplify the positive qualifications of the profession. They are to be timely, appropriately dressed and must exercise good communication skills. The Counsellor will be subject to evaluation by the Principal, and will be recommended annually for continued employment if all job requirements have been met in a successful manner. The Counsellor will create a comprehensive counselling program for the High School, Middle School and Elementary School. The goal of the program is to assist students in all aspects of their development, so they may become responsible happy citizens.
*DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: *
· Support the teaching staff in fostering a positive school environment.
· Provide individual and small group academic support based on classroom or Diverse Learning teacher plans.
· Assist with extra-curricular activities and supervise students during recess, lunch, and before or after school.
· Act as a full-time staff member, maintaining professional conduct at all times.
· Deliver individual and group counselling focused on social skills, anger management, grief, and loss.
· Participate in School-Based Team (SBT) meetings across all school levels.
· Develop and implement counselling programs aligned with student needs and defined objectives.
· Collaborate with School and Nation departments to support students and families.
· Advise parents on discipline, child development, and conflict resolution, and encourage parental engagement in the school community.
· Maintain accurate daily records of student interactions and activities, and complete required statistical and monthly reports.
· Attend staff meetings, professional development days, and mandatory workshops.
· Communicate absences to the school principal and comply with Tsuut?ina Nation policies and procedures.
· Attend the school staff orientation for the duration of the last week of August for each new school year.
· Arrive at the school on operational days no later than 8:00 am, and depart no earlier than 4:00 pm, unless otherwise excused by the Principal.
· Perform additional duties as assigned by the Principal, Vice-Principal, or Education Director under the Fixed Term Agreement.
*QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:*
· Desired Education, Knowledge and Experience:
o A Bachelor's Degree in Social Work or equivalent field is required.
o Knowledge and understanding of child development, counseling techniques, crisis intervention strategies, educational policies and procedures related to student support services.
o Experience working in educational settings with students across different grade levels is an asset.
o Experience in developing and implementing counselling programs is an asset.
