*Purpose of the Role* The kitchen is the heart of the Camp Tidnish experience. For nearly 90 years, Camp Tidnish has been creating unforgettable summers, meaningful connections, and life-changing experiences for campers and staff alike.
As an Assistant Cook, you will provide critical daily support to the Food Service Manager, helping us deliver safe, high-quality, and nutritious meals to our campers and staff in accordance with Easter Seals Nova Scotia policies and procedures. You will work in a fast-paced environment, ensuring that dietary needs are met and that our kitchen operates seamlessly to fuel the magic of camp.
*Education & Experience*
* Must be a high school graduate. * Must have completed or be willing to complete Food Safety Certification. * Previous experience working in a busy kitchen is considered an asset. * Familiarity with special diets (pureed, diabetic, gluten-free, etc.) is considered an asset. * Experience working or volunteering with persons with disabilities is an asset.
*Required Qualifications*
* Strong initiative, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. * Ability to work effectively and manage stress in a busy, fast-paced atmosphere. * Willingness to learn, adapt, and adhere to camp policies, procedures, and programs. * Must be a team player with a commitment to the philosophy that ?Campers Come First.? * Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search, as well as a clear digital Child Abuse Register check.
*Key Responsibilities* Under the direction of the Food Service Manager, the Assistant Cook is expected to:
* *Food Preparation:* Assist in all meal and snack preparations. * *Timing & Coordination:* Respect meal times as closely as possible to complement camper medication schedules and allow for effective program delivery. * *Sanitation & Cleanliness:* Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in all areas of the kitchen. Wash all dishes, pots, serving trays, and utensils to meet sanitary health codes. * *Daily Maintenance:* Ensure all garbage is removed from the kitchen and food storage room after every meal. Damp mop the kitchen floor after every meal and do a full mop every night in partnership with the Food Service Manager. * *Operations:* Prepare dishes and set tables 30 minutes before lunch and supper. Keep a regular inventory of cleaning supplies and inform the Food Service Manager when orders are required. Gather dishcloths and kitchen linen every evening. * *Session Turnarounds:* Thoroughly clean the kitchen (including ovens, refrigerators, walls, and the dishwasher) on the last night of each session. * *Camp Integration:* Assist the camp team in monitoring the health and welfare of campers, and participate in camper-related activities when primary kitchen duties are completed. * Participate fully in all recommended training sessions and perform other duties as required.
*Working Conditions*
* *Live-On-Site Requirement:* This is a residential position. All primary work duties take place on-site at the Camp Tidnish facility. The Assistant Cook is required to live on-site during active camp sessions and be on call as needed. * Room and board are included as part of compensation. * Hours of work are directly related to a typical camp day plus any additional hours required to fulfill the duties associated with the kitchen.
