About this role

Job summary

We are looking for a detail-oriented and motivated Clinical Coder to join our friendly and forward-thinking team at The Thornton Practice.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in ensuring high-quality patient data, supporting clinical care, and improving practice performance. You will work closely with GPs, nurses, and the wider administrative team to accurately code clinical information using SNOMED CT and other recognised systems.

Main duties of the job

Accurately coding clinical information from patient records, consultations, and correspondence Processing and coding documents using our AI-supported system (Anima) Supporting QOF, audits, and reporting through high-quality data Working collaboratively with clinicians to ensure accurate and consistent coding Helping improve workflows through effective use of digital tools Maintaining high standards of data quality, confidentiality, and compliance

Job description Job responsibilities

Clinical Coding

Accurately extract and code clinical information from patient records, consultation notes, hospital letters, and documentation processed through Anima using recognised coding systems (e.g. SNOMED CT, Read Codes).

Ensure coding reflects diagnoses, procedures, investigations, and outcomes.

Use AI-supported workflows to prioritise and streamline document handling.

Work with automated document triage systems to ensure timely and accurate coding.

Data Quality & Compliance

Maintain high standards of data quality and consistency across clinical systems and AI-supported workflows.

Validate and sense-check information processed through Anima to ensure clinical accuracy.

Ensure coding supports QOF, enhanced services, and reporting requirements.

Identify and correct coding errors or omissions in collaboration with clinical staff.

Audit & Reporting

Support clinical audits and data validation exercises by providing accurate coded data.

Assist in the preparation of reports for internal use and external bodies (e.g. NHS England, ICBs).

Monitor coding trends and contribute to improvements in clinical documentation.

Team Collaboration

Liaise with GPs, nurses, and administrative staff to clarify coding queries.

Support colleagues in understanding and using digital tools such as Anima.

Contribute to discussions on data quality, coding updates, and service improvements.

Attend meetings and contribute to discussions on data quality, coding updates, and service improvement.

Provide support and guidance to colleagues on coding best practices.

Professional Development

Keep up to date with changes in coding standards and clinical terminology.

Undertake relevant training and maintain knowledge of NHS coding policies and procedures.

Participate in peer reviews and reflective practice to enhance coding accuracy and consistency.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Maths and English GCSE or equivalent experience Experience in clinical coding within a GP or healthcare setting Knowledge of SNOMED CT / Read Codes Strong attention to detail and accuracy Good understanding of medical terminology Confident using clinical systems Excellent organisational and communication skills

Desirable

Accredited clinical coding qualification Experience working in general practice Experience or interest in digital systems / AI tools such as Anima Interest in service improvement and innovation

Experience Essential

Strong customer service and communication skills Logical thinker who can provide a rationale for decision made Flexibility and understanding of importance of teamwork Strong judgement and decision-making skills Strong IT skills

Desirable

Experience in Primary Care Experience in healthcare roles Strong analytical skills
