Main duties of the job

Main Duties of the Role:

Blood Sample Collection: Carry out venepuncture in line with clinical guidelines to obtain blood samples safely and efficiently.

Patient Care and Comfort: Support patients throughout the process, helping them feel at ease and responding appropriately to any concerns or anxiety.

Sample Handling: Accurately label, store, and prepare samples for transport to the laboratory, ensuring full compliance with procedures.

Infection Prevention and Safety: Adhere to infection control standards, including safe disposal of sharps and maintaining a clean clinical environment.

Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and timely records of patient information, requested tests, and samples within the clinical system.

Stock Control: Monitor and restock phlebotomy supplies to ensure equipment is always available.

Team Working: Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, GPA's and administrative staff to support effective patient care and service delivery.

Professional Development: Keep knowledge up to date with best practice and attend training as required.

Linden Hall Surgery operates across both of our branch sites at Muxton and Harper Adams University in Edgmond, supporting a diverse and growing patient population. We are a partnership of four GP partners, working alongside a dedicated multidisciplinary team.

Main Responsibilities and duties

The following are the core responsibilities of the Phlebotomist in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample and centrifuge samples as required

Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

Maintaining accurate patient records on the clinical IT system and ensuring specimens are ready for onward transportation

The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

Maintaining effective liaison with the NHS Trust laboratory staff

Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters

Being an integral part of the general practice team

Ensuring clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisations IPC Policy

Working within national and local protocols where these exist

Be aware of duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to practice policies and procedures on safeguarding adults and safeguarding children

Supporting the administrative team on an as-required basis

Undertaking all mandatory training and induction programmes

Maintaining a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

Educated to GCSE level or equivalent Qualification in Phlebotomy Training in Infection Control

Experience Essential

Experience in a GP Practice Experience in EMIS Ability to record Clinical notes Competent in the use of Office and Outlook Ability to follow clinical policy and procedure Effective time management
