Job summary
Oak Tree surgery requires a part time phlebotomist 20 hours per week Monday to Friday 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.You will work collaboratively with GPs, healthcare assistants, and administrative staff to support patient wellbeing and preventative care, while contributing to quality improvement within the practice.
Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be carrying out phlebotomy as part of the nursing team working alongside our existing healthcare assistants and phlebotomist.

Job Summary
The Phlebotomist is responsible for the collection of blood samples from patients within a General Practice setting.
The role supports the clinical team by ensuring high-quality sample collection, accurate patient identification, and safe handling of specimens in accordance with clinical and infection control procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Perform venepuncture on adult and, where trained, paediatric patients.
Ensure correct patient identification prior to specimen collection.
Collect, label, and prepare blood samples in line with practice protocols.
Monitor patients for adverse reactions.
Maintain accurate clinical records.
Provide a professional and reassuring service to patients.
Ensure safe handling, storage, and transport of samples.
Adhere to infection control and health and safety policies.
Manage phlebotomy clinics and appointments.
Maintain stock levels and report shortages.

Competent in venepuncture techniques.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work independently and in a team.
Attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to support anxious patients.
Basic IT skills.
Qualifications and Experience
Phlebotomy training or certification.
Experience in venepuncture.
Previous GP or primary care experience desirable.
Familiarity with NHS clinical systems desirable.
Working Conditions
Based within a GP practice setting.
May involve early morning clinics.
Exposure to blood and bodily fluids (PPE provided).
Accountability
Reports to Lead Nurse.
Accountable to GP Partners
Other Duties
Participate in training and CPD.
Support audits and service improvement.
Undertake other duties as required.
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
Recognised phlebotomy training or certification Evidence of competency in venepuncture
Desirable
Care Certificate or equivalent Basic Life Support (BLS) training Infection Prevention & Control training
Experience Essential
Experience of performing venepuncture Experience dealing with patients in a healthcare setting
Desirable
Experience working within General Practice or primary care Experience using NHS clinical systems (e.g., EMIS ) Experience handling and processing laboratory samples
