An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and dynamic clinician to join Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust as a Trauma Lead Practitioner within Trauma & Orthopaedics.
This is a senior clinical leadership role combining advanced clinical practice, service leadership, and workforce development across Trauma and Orthopaedic services.
You will lead and coordinate the Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) workforce across the county, while also working as an expert autonomous practitioner, supporting patient care across emergency, inpatient, theatre, and outpatient settings.

Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities include:
Clinical Leadership
Provide strategic and operational leadership to Trauma & Orthopaedic Nurse Practitioner teams
Lead workforce development, performance management, and service delivery
Drive service redesign in line with national priorities (e.g. GIRFT, BPT, NHFD)
Ensure delivery against waiting time and outpatient performance targets
Advanced Clinical Practice
Work autonomously assessing, diagnosing, and managing trauma and orthopaedic patients
Run nurse-led clinics and contribute to consultant-led services
Perform advanced procedures including: Joint injections and aspirations, Fascia iliaca block, Wound closure and minor surgical procedures
Act as first assistant in theatre and support peri-operative care
Prescribe independently and manage full episodes of patient care
Service Development & Governance
Lead on clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement
Oversee data quality and compliance with NHFD and national audit requirements
Ensure learning from harm reviews and drive continuous improvement
Support development of clinical pathways across sites
Multidisciplinary Working
Collaborate with consultants, anaesthetics, ED, wards, and community teams
Act as a key clinical link across the patient pathway
Contribute to MDT decision-making and service planning

Job description Job responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY
The post holder will provide leadership to the trauma and orthopaedic advanced nurse practitioner teams, manage and coordinate the nurse practitioner service across the county for both Trauma and orthopaedics. They will work clinically as an expert practitioner in both the trauma nurse practitioner role and the surgical care practitioner role to ensure adequate cover of rotas to cover for leave and sickness where required.
To redesign clinical services in line with local and national drivers.
To develop local strategies to impact on local and national targets such as BPT for hip fractures, GIRFT.
They will ensure compliance across the county in accurate collection, inputting and interpretation of data on the NHFD and will ensure harm review process is carried out for all breaches of the target are fed back into the clinical governance forum in order to learn and implement change.
To develop and empower a strong clinically competent nurse practitioner workforce which is proactive and reactive to changing nature of the T&O service.
They will work alongside the orthopaedic and trauma medical teams as an autonomous practitioner in the emergency department and outpatient setting.
See new referrals and follow up patients use advanced clinical skills to make clinical judgements to decide on treatment plans and/or decide on surgical management plans for patients with Trauma and orthopaedic conditions.
They will work autonomously in nurse led clinics and support consultant in consultant led clinics seeing elective foot and ankle conditions.
They will take a leading role in ensuring local and national targets for outpatient procedures and waiting lists are met.
The post holder will commence treatment plans including interventional procedures such as joint injection and independently prescribing medications to treat conditions.
They will be part of the surgical team acting as first assistant to the surgeon and carry out minor procedures and wound closure under supervision of consultant orthopaedic surgeon.
They will demonstrate critical thinking safe, clinical decision-making and expert care, including assessment and diagnostic skills, for patients within their practice.
They will work collaboratively with the multi -disciplinary team to meet the needs of patients, supporting the development and delivery of care pathways, policies and procedures, and providing nurse leadership as required.
They will support the T&O Matons across county with clinical knowledge and expert practice to develop and nurture nursing and medical workforce working within T&O
To work collaboratively with the stakeholders to provide excellent trauma and orthopaedic care for the population of Worcestershire.
Key Duties: Clinical practice
The post holder :-
Will use advanced nursing skills to autonomously see trauma patients in both the Emergency department and the outpatients setting and clinical examine, take in-depth history, develop on treatment plan and/ or surgery.
They will ensure that trauma cases is treated at the most appropriate site and that there is efficient and effective use of capacity across both sites and works to develop pathways for this.
They will order investigation (some under protocol), carry out investigations such as joint aspiration and initiate treatment where possible for example antibiotic therapy independently .
They will counsel and consent patients for their surgical procedure appropriately within scope of practice and carryout surgical site marking.
Will attend the trauma emergency calls in the emergency department and be part of the trauma team involved in resuscitating and assessing seriously injured trauma patients.
Will attend the deteriorating patients on the ward areas and independently initiate assessment, investigation, referral and treatment to minimise delays in response for sepsis triggers etc.
Will carry out invasive procedures such as fascia iliaca blocks, steroid joint injections/ aspirations, soft tissue steroid injections.
Will see new elective orthopaedic patients referrals and follow up patients in Nurse Led clinics and also be part of the consultant led clinic team seeing complex patients in orthopaedic clinics and will be able to add patients to the waiting list for surgical procedures.
They will be able to independently order and interpret and act on investigations results autonomous.
Will see follow up orthopaedic patients in nurse led clinics and autonomously decide on treatment plans and discharge patients back to primary care.
Will be able to independently clinically examine and assess patient needs from a physiological and psychological perspective, and plan clinical care accordingly.
The post holder will prescribe and review patients medication for therapeutic effectiveness, appropriate to patient needs and in accordance with evidence-based practice and national and practice protocols, and within scope of practice
Will provide one stop assessment and treatment clinics.
Work with patients in order to support compliance with and adherence to prescribed treatments.
Will work alongside identified orthopaedic consultants and their teams to assist in the clinical management of orthopaedic and trauma patients, providing continuity of care for the patients whole pathway.
Will ensure good communication between the multidisciplinary team and provide continuity and support for junior doctors and support services.
Will work with consultants to organise the theatre lists and prioritisation of list order
Will be an Independent non-medical prescriber.
The post holder will be able to make a safe assessment of patients post intervention or surgery and independently discharge patients back to primary care as appropriate.
Advanced skills may include, Arterial Blood gas sampling, venepuncture, and cannulation, female and male catheterisation, x-ray requesting and MRI requesting on behalf of the consultant, fasica iliaca block insertion, Joint and soft tissue injection.
Will act as Surgical first assistant during operative procedures including, primary surgical closure of wounds, minor surgical procedures and surgical site marking and consent for surgical procedures.
The post holder may treat and complete a patients episode of care without supervision from the orthopaedic consultant
Will support and advice ward staff on patient care and management and apply orthopaedic appliances such as traction, splints and orthotics.
Will make appropriate referrals to other specialities / agencies within either the hospital or community setting e.g. Primary Care, Social Services, other specialities, within their scope of practise.
The post holder will participate in medical ward rounds with all consultants and work alongside their teams providing nursing advice to medical staff and being part of the decision-making process.
Will able to independently discharge both from in-patient stay and from the outpatients clinic, ending a patients episode for responsible Consultants and completing electronic discharge summaries.

Will provide leadership and line manage the team of orthopaedic and trauma nurse practitioners ensuring compliance with all training and development needs, sickness, disciplinary procedures and ensure pastoral needs are met.
Undertake annual performance development review of trauma and orthopaedic nurse practitioners ensuring each has a personal development plan to optimise their performance and potential for career progression.
Implement agreed systems to ensure the nursing / midwifery workforce is fit for purpose in relation to statutory and mandatory training.
