About this role

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Women and Children's Division for nurse or midwife to join the Divisional Continuous Learning and Improvement Team on a permanent basis as Neonatal lead. This role will support routine Divisional Governance requirements and help us to achieve evolving priorities of the Division and national safety agenda. We are looking for someone who is passionate about patient safety and continuous quality improvement for the role. Within this position, the post holder will work within the current established Continuous Improvement and Learning Team, further developing robust systems and processes to implement learning.

Southmead Neonatal Intensive Care Unit has 34 cots, comprising of 8 ITU, 8 HDU, 18 SC and an additional 10 cots on Transitional Care. We are a well established Level 3 unit and tertiary referral centre, providing a centre of excellence for babies born as premature as 22 weeks gestation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide expert advice in relation to the management, reporting, investigation and follow up of adverse clinical incidents within the Neonatal setting. They will work in collaboration with the multi disciplinary team to develop robust, meaningful recommendations and identify actions for learning from incidents.

Person Specification

Education/Training/Qualifications Essential

Educated to degree level or equivalent in a health-related subject Current NMC Registration

Evidence of further professional and/or development

Work Experience Essential

Experience at band 6 in perinatal clinical practice Knowledge of perinatal issues in the wider context of the NHS Experience of working with patients and families to drive service improvement Experience of working with clinical teams to support improvement in patient safety Experience of working to deadlines in a high-pressure environment

Knowledge/Skills and abilities Essential

Knowledge of perinatal issues in the wider context of the NHS Knowledge of research, Quality Improvement (QI) methodology and audit Knowledge of incident reporting management system Ability to understand the facts through gathering of evidence and building evidence-based narrative Ability to draw conclusions and make findings Excellent presentation skills

Desirable

Evidence of successful change management such as the implementation of a change in practice in response to national or local guidance or the planning and implementation of change in response to user comments/needs Experience of report writing and/or producing professional documents Ability to form and structure an investigation Ability to make safety recommendations based on the evidence, analysis and findings
