About the project This project investigates the role of compensation mechanisms in the Norwegian green transition, with a specific focus on how such tools are developed, distributed, and experienced. While mechanisms (such as grants, rebates, and subsidies) are central to Norway’s climate strategy, emerging evidence suggests they may be unevenly accessed across social groups, economic sectors, and geographical areas. In parallel, public debates about the use of public funds in the green transition—often framed in Norway as part of the “sløseri-debatt” (waste debate)—have raised concerns about inefficiency, waste, and the targeting of support schemes. The project’s goal is to develop new knowledge about how compensation mechanisms shape the distribution of costs and benefits in the green transition. It opens for analyses of how these mechanisms function in practice, who gains access to/benefits from policy tools, which barriers may limit policy uptake, and how policies can be improved to better align environmental objectives with broader societal goals.
