About this role

Location: Labskin, Sand Hutton, York, YO41 1LZ Contract Type: Fixed Term (26 months)

This Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) brings together Labskin Ltd and Aston University to create the first immune‑competent 3D human skin model incorporating immune cells. This innovation aims to provide an advanced alternative to animal models for developing therapies, toxicology screening, and disease research.

The project will focus on enhancing Labskin’s existing full‑thickness human skin model by incorporating macrophages—immune cells essential for wound repair, scarring prevention, and disease regulation. This next‑generation model will enable more accurate in vitro analysis of skin health, immunity, and disease mechanisms.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should hold an MSc or higher in cell biology or immunology. A PhD is preferred due to the specialist nature of the work, though MSc/MRes graduates with extensive practical training will also be considered.

Essential skills and experience:

Strong proficiency in cell culture, ideally long‑term cultures Experience with immune assays (e.g., ELISA, antibody‑based cell staining) Excellent aseptic technique Ability to work independently with strong problem‑solving skills Good IT and data‑analysis abilities Ability to learn new laboratory techniques quickly (with academic support)

Desirable skills:

Experience in industry or commercial R&D environments Familiarity with 3D cell culture models Microscopy, histology, or pathology understanding Self‑motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision Effective time management and ability to meet deadlines Proactive attitude

Main Responsibilities

Develop an integrated immune cell culture system that accurately models human skin immunity Explore immune mechanisms and contribute to translational skin research using the new model Overcome technical challenges in merging existing skin biology models with new immune components Manage project time, resources, and documentation, including record‑keeping to support IP protection
