Senior Engineering Manager, eBay Live

About eBay At eBay, we are more than a global ecommerce leader — we are transforming the way the world shops and sells. Our platform connects millions of buyers and sellers across more than 190 markets, helping create economic opportunity for all. We are guided by our customers, energized by bold ideas, and committed to building an inclusive workplace where everyone can do their best work. As we continue to shape the future of ecommerce for enthusiasts, we are looking for leaders who want to build meaningful products at global scale. About the team eBay Live Engineering builds and operates the real-time platform behind eBay's live shopping and interactive experiences. Our team brings together low-latency video, real-time chat, commerce actions, trust and safety, and analytics to create engaging experiences for buyers and sellers around the world. This is an opportunity to lead a team working at the intersection of media, community, and commerce — and to help define what live shopping looks like at eBay.

What you will do

• Lead, coach, and grow a cross-functional full-stack engineering team spanning backend and frontend disciplines, with a strong focus on individual development, performance, and career growth. • Build an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing team culture grounded in trust, accountability, and continuous improvement. • Own delivery outcomes for the team, driving predictable, high-quality execution through strong planning, prioritization, and operational rigor. • Partner closely with Product Management to shape roadmap priorities, maintain a healthy backlog, and align engineering investments with strategic goals and business impact. • Collaborate with product managers, business stakeholders, analytics, and partner engineering teams to define and scale the next generation of eBay Live experiences. • Set and communicate the technical direction for the team, championing sound architecture, engineering excellence, innovation, and high standards for performance, reliability, and quality. • Guide the team through complex technical challenges involving distributed systems, latency-sensitive user experiences, scalability, and operational resilience. • Balance near-term product delivery with long-term platform health, ensuring thoughtful tradeoffs around technical debt, maintainability, and future growth. • Partner effectively with peer managers, senior engineers, and leaders across eBay to align on priorities, influence decisions, and drive shared outcomes. • Help build a world-class organization through hiring, onboarding, succession planning, and ongoing talent development.

What you will bring

• 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading or managing software engineering teams. • A strong technical foundation with experience building and operating large-scale, distributed systems with high expectations for availability, scalability, and resilience. • A proven track record of delivering high-impact products with speed and consistency while maintaining a high bar for engineering quality and operational excellence. • Experience leading teams in Agile development environments, including sprint planning, prioritization, and continuous improvement practices. • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical and business topics, align stakeholders, and influence decisions across multiple levels of the organization. • Strong product and business judgment, with the ability to partner effectively across product, analytics, and business teams to deliver customer-focused outcomes. • The ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing priorities, and lead teams confidently through ambiguity and change.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience building real-time, customer-facing systems such as live streaming, chat, bidding, collaboration tools, gaming, or financial trading platforms, where latency and reliability directly affect user trust and business outcomes. • Experience supporting high-traffic, event-driven products such as launches, flash sales, or live events, including capacity planning, traffic-spike management, and graceful degradation under load. • A strong track record of leading root-cause analysis and driving durable, platform-level fixes that prevent recurring issues and continuously improve the customer experience. • Experience with WebSockets and FGQL is a plus.
