Job Description Under close supervision of at least one (1) year, to train in theory and methodology of HLA to be able to perform the high complexity technical assays necessary to determine MHC compatibility of transplant recipients and donors according to defined laboratory protocols. To be able to perform all testing exhibiting a clear understanding of the principles of the assays being performed; recognizing unusual or atypical results and the urgency in timely reporting of results. To consult supervisor as needed. Key Duties & Responsibilities 1. Upon successful completion of training and competency validation, performs high complexity testing in all areas of the laboratory including DNA isolation and HLA typing, HLA antibody testing, cell isolation and flow cytometry cross-match and short tandem repeat (STR) analysis for engraftment monitoring. Verifies test validity and enters patient/donor results for review by supervisor. Completes the appropriate numbers of tests in a specified timeframe with minimal repeats. Adheres to established safety and technical protocols. 2. On a daily basis, operates instruments according to established testing and quality control protocols. Performs and documents routine function checks and calibrations on instruments as required to ensure proper operation before and during performance of tests. 3. Receives and prepares specimens for analysis by establishing specimen identity. Documents any variation from positive patient identification detected during the preparation, Page 2 of 3 testing and reporting of the specimen. Performs pre-analytical steps to prepare specimens for analysis according to established protocols. Responsible for any special preparation, testing and storage requirements. 4. Participates in laboratory continuing education: attends all scheduled lectures/teleconferences; completes all approved ASHI programs as requested; compiles detailed records of all CE activities and submits yearly to laboratory manager. 5. Demonstrates UAB Medicine core values toward all patients, guests, visitors, students and staff. 6. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical science field required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
