About this role

Sponsor/ Supporting Company: WMG – affiliated with Faraday Institution

Eligibility: 2:1 or equivalent undergraduate in STEM (Masters Degree desirable)

Start Date: Oct 2026 – intake

The Battery Materials & Cells (BMAC) group at WMG, University of Warwick are looking for a well-qualified PhD on linking fundamental battery research and industrial scale up & characterization. The BMAC groups covers research from powders to pouch cells (and recycled back) and includes synthesis and pilot line scale up facilities for industrial alignment.

The PhD project will focus on the development and characterization of next generation Li-ion battery prototypes using the WMG pilot line facilities for industry-like pouch cells (including the new AMBIC – Advanced Materials Battery Industrialization Centre). Chemistries of interest include Ni-rich and LMFP (including blends) and anodeless formats. Research areas will include (but not limited to) determining the ideal electrode processing & formulations; identifying protocols to enhance performance & longevity; and interplay between degradation modes. Characterization methods will include bespoke microscopy facilities, in-house and Synchrotron & neutron operando studies, and advanced electrochemistry.

This project is affiliated with the new Faraday Institution consortium: Lithium ion: Enhancing and Accelerating Performance – LEAP (formerly Degradation). Successful candidates will be affiliated with the LEAP project and Faraday Institution
