About this role

Job summary

We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and proactive Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our dynamic primary care team at our GP practice at Wrafton house Surgery in Hatfield. In this role, you will work under the guidance of our practice nurses and General Practitioners to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care. You will be the first point of clinical contact for many patients, assisting with routine health checks, clinical data collection, immunisation clinics, and essential administrative duties.

Main duties of the job

As a Healthcare Assistant, you will play an important role be supporting both clinicians and patients across a wide range of clinical and preventative services.

Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

Delivering NHS Health Checks (ages 40 to 74) and supporting annual reviews for long-term conditions Supporting health promotion and wellbeing programmes, including health coaching Performing baseline clinical observations including BP, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation, BMI, and urine analysis Facilitating 24-hour blood pressure monitoring Undertakingblood test and packaging samples Performing ECGs and other diagnostic tests Providing wound care and dressings Supporting practice nurses within chronic disease clinics Administering vaccinations where appropriate Acting as a chaperone when required Maintaining clinical equipment, stock levels, and room preparation Ensuring accurate patient record documentation Supporting practice audits and shared learning activitiesYou will also contribute to maintaining a safe, organised and well-stocked clinical environment, ensuring equipment, fridges and clinical waste are managed in line with practice policy.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

Phlebotomy: Perform routine blood tests and package samples for laboratory transport. (this would be a great addition at diabetes/hypertension reviews and works very well in other surgeries, but only used as part of the reviews process)

Immunisation Support: Assist practice nurses with the delivery and administration of routine immunisations and seasonal vaccination campaigns (e.g., Flu, Covid, Shingles) and support practice nurse in baby immunisation clinic, within your scope of practice.

Health Checks: Conduct NHS Health Checks, blood pressure monitoring, smoking cessation and BMI calculations.

Patient Screening: Perform routine urinalysis, ECGs, and basic wound care dressing changes.

Chronic Disease Support: Assist clinical staff in monitoring patients with long-term conditions like diabetes, including diabetic foot checks, and hypertension.

Specimen Handling: Collect, label, and process various clinical specimens accurately.

Practice & Patient Support

Chaperoning: Act as a chaperone for patients during intimate physical examinations.

Stock Management: Maintain, clean, and restock clinical examination rooms and equipment.

Vaccine Management: Assist with cold chain storage management, temperature logging, and stock rotation for immunisations.

Health Promotion: Provide basic, approved healthy lifestyle advice to patients regarding diet, smoking, and exercise.

Administrative & Compliance

Record Keeping: Document all patient interactions, measurements, vaccines administered, and clinical data accurately using EMIS Web.

Infection Control: Adhere strictly to local infection prevention and control policies.

Health & Safety: Report any clinical risks, equipment faults, or safeguarding concerns immediately.

Person Specification

Experience Essential

Care Certificate: Completed or willingness to achieve within 6 months of hire (Essential).

Desirable

Phlebotomy Certificate: Certified competency in adult venepuncture (Highly Desirable), or willingness to achieve within 6 months of hire Immunisation Training: Completed or willingness to undergo formal HCA training for vaccine administration (Highly Desirable). NVQ Level 2/3: Awarded in Health and Social Care or equivalent clinical qualification (Desirable)
