About this role

At Meta Reality Labs Research, our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our team, whose mission is to design, build, and test future consumer AR experiences. As part of our team, you will develop state of the art opto-mechanical system components, camera or display systems, mechanisms, and solutions for next generation research devices. You will become part of a team chartered with the exploration of new concepts through analytical modeling and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, experience working in new technology areas, drive a concept into a prototype, and can envision how a prototype could transition into a high-volume consumer product. The candidate will be responsible for the opto-mechanical design of camera imaging systems and AR eyepiece elements (waveguides + projectors) that have an impact on future AR products at Meta. Additionally, the candidate will participate in developing associated manufacturing processes that solve complex design challenges. This individual will work closely with optical, mechanical, process, simulation, and reliability engineers. Additional collaboration with research scientists, project managers, operations, and international suppliers will be required to develop designs / processes / tools from the concept stage to engineering validation builds. The candidate should continuously develop personal knowledge and expertise in new technology for AR systems and related design, process, and manufacturability topics.

Opto-Mechanical Engineer Responsibilities: From concept to completion, design the opto-mechanical systems in collaboration with internal and external partners that meet mechanical, optical, and reliability requirementsDrive end-to-end discussions on camera, display system down-selection, prototyping, equipment, and tooling for high precision manufacturing and assemblyDrive design and DFM reviews related to: mechanical control outlines, mechanical and optical interfaces, dimensional and optical specifications and tolerances, cosmetics, and product performanceDrive FMEA, failure analysis, tolerance analysis, gauge R&R, and the GD&T activities supporting product scalabilityDesign, execute, and analyze experiments that inform design decisions and process developmentWork closely with external equipment manufacturers, part suppliers, and integrators to support technology deployment and product developmentApply engineering expertise in the areas of opto-mechanics, precision manufacturing, metrology, and tooling designDrive vendors and CMs to provide data analysis and reports of design and process performanceDrive in-field failure analysis of performance gaps of equipmentDocument best practices, SOPs, and cost models by working closely with various cross functional teamsMinimum Qualifications: BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experienceOpto mechanical background with proven working knowledge of: mechanical design as it relates to optical performance, precision engineering and manufacturing, and manufacturing process development of opto-mechanical components/systems5+ years of experience using 3D CAD software to work on large assemblies in a document controlled environmentWorking knowledge of GD&T standards, dimensional metrology, statistics, and their application to process and design controls in high volume manufacturingExperience employing both traditional and rapid manufacturing techniques to create high precision components and assembliesKnowledge of designing for low particle environments/cleanroomsKnowledge of optical component/module mounting, interfaces, and adhesive bondingMechanical and optical testing and analysis experience (FEA, ray tracing, reliability testing, materials testing, statistical analysis, etc.)Preferred Qualifications: Experience with design and prototyping of head-mounted optical systems and/or bench-top optical setupsExperience with dimensional metrology equipment such as CMMs, OMMs, and interferometersMS, PhD in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experienceExperience using NX preferredExperience with product lifecycle management systems and document controlKnowledge of image processing and optical-display metrics, such as MTF, contrast, luminance, uniformity etc.Knowledge of behavior of materials (including brittle materials) and structural modeling/optimization experienceData processing experience using Matlab, R, Python, etcFamiliar with optical system testing, data/statistical analysis5+ years of experience in consumer electronics product development and manufacturingExperience working with international equipment vendors and international contract manufacturers5+ years experience working on mechanical designs of optical systems (lens assemblies, cameras, metrology instruments, illuminators, displays, lasers, mirrors, MEMS, etc.)About Meta:

Meta builds technologies that help people connect, find communities, and grow businesses. When Facebook launched in 2004, it changed the way people connect. Apps like Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp further empowered billions around the world. Now, Meta is moving beyond 2D screens toward immersive experiences like augmented and virtual reality to help build the next evolution in social technology. People who choose to build their careers by building with us at Meta help shape a future that will take us beyond what digital connection makes possible today-beyond the constraints of screens, the limits of distance, and even the rules of physics.
