Job summary

Senior Clinical Fellow - Vitreo-retinal (VR) Service | Southend Hospital

We are seeking a motivated Senior Clinical Fellow to join our well-established Vitreo-retinal (VR) service at Southend Hospital.

This role is ideally suited to candidates with general ophthalmology training and some experience in VR who are keen to further develop their clinical and surgical expertise in the management of vitreo-retinal conditions.

However, applicants without prior VR experience will be considered based on merit. You must demonstrate strong intraocular surgical skills, including the ability to perform independent cataract surgery and slit lamp retinal laser procedures.

Our VR service is a busy and expanding unit, performing over 500 vitrectomy procedures annually, offering excellent exposure to a wide range of complex cases. There are also opportunities to contribute to ongoing service development both locally and within the community.

While this post is included on the British & Eire Association of Vitreo-retinal Surgeons (BEAVRS) list of national fellowships, it is not currently recognised for subspecialty training by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.

Main duties of the job

To act as point of contact for Vitreo-retinal support to other medical staff within the department and undertake some general ophthalmic outpatient clinic commitment.

To coordinate and undertake an acute Vitreo-retinal service, under the guidance of the Vitreo-retinal Consultants as required.

Attending to administrative matters and correspondence relating to patients.

Supervised scheduled operating theatre sessions, Outpatient sessions, & teaching session

Attending to matters and correspondence relating to patientsSPAs to be undertaken on-site.

Person Specification

Qualifications Essential

MBBS or equivalent medical qualification Successful completion of FRCOphth or equivalent Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice

Skills Essential

Retinal experience and skills - similar to a trainee within 6 months of CCT Demonstrable evidence of training and expertise in Retinal surgery

Experience Essential

Demonstrable experience of managing patients within Retinal in collaboration with other subspecialties to optimize surgical and ophthalmic outcomes. Surgical management of Retinal surgery

Desirable

Extensive experience in Ophthalmology, previous Vitreoretinal surgical experience preferable
